Happy Labor Day Weekend! It looks like the weather is going to be fabulous so enjoy your long weekend!

Thursday Kicks off the Holiday Weekend


This Thursday's Science Cafe at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences will focus on the Science Behind Fermented Foods and Beneficial Bacteria. Along with the lecture and extended hours, you are also invited to a free class on Getting Started in Astronomy.

Thursday's Downtown Raleigh Bluegrass Concert will feature the music of Acoustic Manner, food trucks and local beers.
 

This Thursday, both Mipso and Victoria Lee will be playing a Back Porch Music on the Lawn Concert at the American Tobacco Campus Amphitheater.

 
The fun continues Friday at the NC Museum of Art. Peter Lamb and the Wolves will be playing the tunes for Art in the Evening and the Sound Bite will explore how focusing in on a subject can change your perception of it. Come back Saturday night to see this years Oscar's Best Picture winner, 12 Years a Slave.
 
You are invited to an Opening Reception Friday evening at the Halle Cultural Arts Center honoring five local artists. The show will run until October 3rd.
 
Head on over to Downtown Historic Hillsborough for Last Fridays. This month's celebration will feature a concert by The Company Band on the Old Courthouse Lawn and the Mt. Bright Baptist Church's Gospel Choir at the Burwell School Historic Site.
 
Festivals and Fun
 
City Plaza in Downtown Raleigh will be hosting the annual African American Cultural Festival both Saturday and Sunday. The Festival will feature an African American arts and crafts market, non-stop live entertainment, specialty items and food vendors. There will even be a family-friendly Village featuring performances and educational, interactive programming for school-aged children.

 

Durham Central Park will host a Food Truck Rodeo Sunday. Bring a blanket or a lawn chair so that you can take the night off from cooking.
 
Historic Yates Mill Pond County Park will be offering Saturday at the Old Mill Tours and Mill Heritage & Local History Tours on Sunday.
 
The Halle Cultural Arts Center will be showing Dolphin Tale as this week's Tuesday Morning Movie. Wednesday night's Academy Award Adult Film Series presents American Hustle.
 
YogaFest Raleigh will showcase accessible yoga practices and the excellent yoga teachers in the area. The weekly event provides free yoga classes at the City Plaza Astroturf on Wednesday evenings Through September.
 
The Pickin' In The Pines Bluegrass Series kicks off Wednesday evening at Regency Park. The five week long series will feature local bluegrass groups every Wednesday night. Tickets are $5, kids 12 and under are free and this week's concert features Old Habits.

More Weekend Fun at the Parks
 
Explore Crabtree Creek and, if time allows, the wetland area north of Aviation Parkway during Friday's Sunset Canoe Trip at Lake Crabtree County Park.

 

Join park staff for a Blue Jay Garden Sampler Saturday morning. Take a peek at a mini pond, wildflower garden, composting area, butterfly garden and children"s garden then enjoy activities that will make you eager to use some of these ideas in your own yard.
 
Join a park naturalist for a Canoe Trip along the Eno River and through the Occoneechee Mountain State Natural Area Saturday. All equipment is provided and the program is free!
 
Learn how Terrific Turtles are Saturday morning along the American Tobacco Trail.
 
Lake Crabtree County Park hosts Crabtree Casters on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of each month. Come on out for an informal fishing experience for the whole family.
 
Marsh Creek Park invites you to bring some friends over on Wednesday & Friday evenings for Free Futsal Open Play. Futsal is a 5-on-5 version of soccer that is played on a smaller surface with a heavier ball. They will have timed matches and a sign-up sheet to allow all participants ages 18 and over to play.
 
Lots to do at the Fairgrounds

There is quite an eclectic mix again this weekend at the State Fairgrounds. Some of the events do have a small admission charge so make sure to click through for all the details.

The Hunt Horse Complex will be hosting the
Labor of Love Horse Show on Saturday and Sunday. There will be all levels of dressage competition. There will also be an Equestrian Exchange Consignment Sale with a Special Premier Shopping Night Thursday and Open Shopping Saturday through Monday.

AKC registered dogs will compete each day Friday through Monday for points leading to championships, as well as dog obedience trials for degrees and obedience championship points at the Kennel Club Dog Show.
 
Treasures of the Earth Gem, Mineral & Jewelry will bring together collections gold and sterling silver jewelry, loose gems, pearls, beads and findings, minerals, crystals, fossils all under one roof.
