We, here at ParkGeek, hope you and your family are enjoying all that the Holiday season has to offer and that you have had a great year. There are several fun and entertaining events to participate in to end 2014 and bring 2015 in. There are still a few Christmas events. Laser Holidays and the 3D film, The Light Before Christmas are shown daily on the Natural Science Center of Greensboro's 40' Omnisphere Screen through December 28th.

 
The Triangle Tree Challenge on the American Tobacco Campus wraps up voting on Friday. Once you see all the decorated trees, go online and vote for your favorite non-profit decorated tree so they can win prizes. The winner will be announced on Monday, December 22nd on WRAL's 10:00pm News on FOX 50.
 
Also in Durham, check out the Ice Factory at American Tobacco. The outdoor rink features Themed Thursdays for added fun and $2 off.
 
The Raleigh Winterfest Ice Rink is open through February 1st. The rink features Two for Tuesday Specials, Date & Skate Thursdays and Rock Around the Rink Fridays with local DJ's.
 
Join the Burwell School Historic Site and St. Matthew's Episcopal Church for the 12th year of Allan Gurganus' and Michael Malone's performance of Charles Dickens' timeless Victorian tale, A Christmas Carol! There will be performances both Thursday and Friday evenings.
 
Santa is lost in Raleigh and Holly the Elf needs your help to find him! Jump aboard the Santa Trolley and help Holly track Santa down in time for Christmas this Friday night. Its popular, so get your tickets early.
 
Come celebrate Las Posadas in Apex Friday. The evening will start at Apex United Methodist Church with a song-filled processional to The Halle. At The Halle, enjoy a potluck dinner, the breaking of the piñatas, songs and festivities.
 
The Sarah P Duke Gardens invite you to join them for a Holiday Celebration featuring traditions from all over the world Saturday afternoon.
 
Shop for those last minute gifts at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds Saturday during the Last Minute Christmas Shopping Expo. Sunday at the Fairgrounds, celebrate Fiesta Navidena with a Community Outreach Event. Also at the Fairgrounds, cheer on your favorite horse and rider at next weekend's Indoor Holiday Classic Hunter Jumper Horse Show.
 
Starting Monday, December 29th, the Holly Springs Cultural Center will be running a 3 Day Holiday Movie Festival. A wide variety of different holiday films will be shown for free each day Monday through Wednesday so click through for the whole line up. Before the festival starts, their regular Monday Morning Movies will be Elf on December 22nd and The Santa Claus on the 29th.
 
Several area Farmer's Markets operate year round like Durham and Carrboro. This Saturday, The Holly Springs Cultural Center will host the second monthly Winter Market to help you get ready for all your holiday meals.
 
Museums Host More Holiday Fun
 
The Halle Cultural Arts Center will host Pizza & a Movie Night Thursday with the family feature How to Train Your Dragon 2 . Come back for a Super Fun Saturday to sample activities and upcoming art camps.

 The Lab at the Museum of Life and Science is transforming into a Holiday Makerspace through December 24th and you're invited! Create a different DIY craft every day of the week, and explore the science behind it with a hands-on experiment. They will be Frozen Over from December 23rd until January 19th. Come celebrate winter indoors at their wintery playground featuring giant felt snowmen, igloos, snowball targets, snowflake patterning and a synthetic ice rink.

 Explore the Winter Wonder Weeks with your little ones at Marbles Kids Museum. From December 20th until January 4th, Marbles will feature festive holiday activities like Twinkle Time, Radical Recess, Present Pile-Up and lots more! Click through for the complete schedule of festive fun. Have some Hockey Fun with the Carolina Hurricanes, Tuesday, December 30th.
 
In addition to their holiday movies, the Holly Springs Cultural Center will be showing the movie Ice Age Dawn of the Dinosaurs Saturday, December 20th and Ice Age Continental Drift on Saturday, December 27th.
 
The North Carolina Museum of Art continues to kick off the weekend in style. December 19th features the band Fusion Collective South, an Art Exploration on the Mysteries of Discretion and a Holiday Fun Friday for the whole family featuring Santa, games, art making, treats, music, and entertainment by the Motley Tones all with a pirate theme. December 26th will feature the British Invaders Band, an Art Exploration focusing on the Allure of Copper and a celebration of Boxing Day with English-inspired cocktails, and a Museum Store sale on holiday merchandise.
 
The PR&CR Dance Winter Open House continues through Friday, December 19th at the Fuquay Varina Community Center.
 
Science Thursday at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences brings a Science Cafe on The Sun: Common and Uncommon Events and Game Night along with extended hours.
 
Enjoy the Winter Sunshine at a Park

Walk Through the Seasons on Tuesday, December 23rd with a Museum naturalist to explore what's going on this time of year in the prairie, pond and lowland arboretum. Bring your little ones on Thursdays to hear Nature Stories or join them on Saturdays to see how you can become a Citizen Scientist.

Take a Trail Trek along the American Tobacco Trail Thursday afternoon and explore Nature's Clean Up Crew, how the scavengers and decomposers perform a necessary but often overlooked role in the environment.
 
Hear some stories, look at the moon through a telescope and take a moonlit walk at Friday's Crowder by Night.
 
Bring your binoculars and join them Friday morning at Eno River State Park for a relaxing morning of Birdwatching. Come back Saturday to enjoy an Open House at the historic Piper Cox House, a hike out to the Eno Quarry, or a hike out to the Fanny Breeze Homesite.
 
Come and learn about Occoneechee Mountain's geologic wonders as you explore the Pyrophyllite Quarry with a real geologist Saturday.
 
The Monthly Mileage Hike Saturday at Raven Rock State Park will finish off 2014 with a 12 mile hike on several trails in the park.
 
Wake Audubon invites you to come help them take their Annual Winter Bird Count this Saturday at Historic Yates Mill County Park. You do need to pre-register so click through for all the details. All day Saturday, December 27th, feel free to drop in and Make a Flake as part of Yates Mill's Art in the Park Program.
 
Explore Umstead State Park Tuesday to look for Waterfowl by Canoe. Learn Basic Land Navigation skills using a map and compass on Sunday, December 28th or Winter Tree ID on Monday, December 29th.
 
Join them at Harris Lake County Park Saturday, December 27th for a game of "I Spy" as you take a Winter Hayride to their Longleaf Pine Forest and Womble Family history site. After the ride you can decorate a pine tree cookie.
 
Come practice your winter tree ID skills with Blue Jay County park staff on a Winter Ramble Saturday, December 27th that includes a fun and friendly amateur photography contest.
 
Get Your First Night Raleigh 2015 Button Now!
 
If you want to bring in the New Year with a blast, Downtown Raleigh is where you will want to be! First Night Raleigh 2015 actually includes two celebrations. The Children's Celebration will be held from 2:00pm - 6:00pm at the North Carolina Museum of History, the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences and on the Bicentennial Plaza. The Children's Celebration culminates with a People's Procession, concert by The Barefoot Movement and an Early Countdown at 7:00pm complete with acorn drop and fireworks. The First Night Raleigh 2015 evening entertainment offers something for everyone and culminates with a concert by the Augustines and a midnight countdown highlighted by the famous Raleigh Acorn Drop and Fireworks! Both celebrations feature a wide variety of Out of this World entertainment from a ferris wheel, sleigh rides, Pop up wedding chapel, theater, comedy, music, dance performances and interactive activities. Ring in the Noon Year with kids at Marbles at 12:00 noon. Regular admission applies New Years Eve, but admission will be discounted to $2 all day New Years Day.
 
Start 2015 Off with a Hike
 
Each year on January 1st, the Eno River Association sponsors a fun-filled afternoon of guided hikes, refreshments and merriment. This year, the New Year's Day Hike will offer two hike options, a 4-5 mile hike and a shorter, 2 mile route. There will be something for everyone, so come one, come all and enjoy New Year's Day at the Eno!

 

William B. Umstead State Park is hosting a First Day Hike.
Start the New Year and enjoy a Hike for Your Health First Day Hike with a Park Ranger at Raven Rock State Park. The Hike for Your Health Hikes are offered every Thursday. If you want to sleep in New Years Day, you can join them Thursday afternoon for a First Hike.
Come New Years Day and join a park ranger for a scavenger hunt and hike on the Rolling View Track Trail at Falls Lake State Recreation Area.
Come on out to Jordan Lake for a First Day Hike and enjoy a beautiful hike with a ranger to the New Hope Overlook along the Blue Loop Trail.
Cary will host their annual Kwanzaa Celebration on Tuesday, December 30th at the Cary Arts Center. This year's festival will feature performances by Chuck Davis and the African American Dance Ensemble. There will also be a craft and nonprofit fair, children's activity and African food.
