Whether you are into the crisp cold air of winter or are waiting for the warm winds of spring to come, there is everything from marches & parades to popcorn celebrations and birdwatching to make for a great long weekend!

Monday is Martin Luther King, Jr Day and there are several observances here in the Triangle.

The Paige Walker Arts & History Center will host the annual Women of Action Gathering Friday evening as part of Cary's MLK, Jr. Dreamfest events. Keynote Speaker, Dr. Josephine Brown, a Weight Management Specialist, will share her perspective of New Year/New You to encourage and empower change.

Dreamfest continues Saturday with An Arts Tribute to Martin at the Cary Arts Center. There will be a performance by Gail Jackson, accomplished soprano, and a special performance by The Gifted Arts, Inc. The program will be followed by a free showing of Disney's "Selma, Lord, Selma" at the Cary Theater

Also at the Cary Arts Center Saturday, Dreamfest presents the International Diversity Summit, a day of dedication, communication and inspiration.

Cary's MLK, Jr. Dreamfest continues Sunday with a screening of Selma at the Cary Theater.

Downtown Raleigh will host a Memorial March on Monday morning as a peaceful and somber way to show appreciation for the contributions of the historic Civil Rights Movement.

UNCMLK2015 on the Campus of UNC in Chapel Hill will span Monday through Sunday. The events are all free, but do require tickets.

The MLK Day of Service is a national campaign urging citizens to give back to their community on the King holiday. The Town of Cary invites you to volunteer with the Spruce Program Monday as they beautify and clean up the Middle Creek Community Center Park and grounds.

They will be Remembering the Legacy through the Arts: MLLK in Durham Saturday afternoon through a day of artistic and cultural celebration at the W. D. Hill Recreation Center.

Garner's Annual MLK Celebration Sunday at the Garner Performing Arts Center will include musical performances, a keynote speaker and a meet-the-artists reception for the Thou Art Black Church exhibition.

Fuquay-Varina will host a Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Monday with a March, Breakfast and Program.

Marbles Kids Museum will be open Monday and you are invited to join them for Community Heroes Day and meet real community heroes like a paramedic, teacher and a police officer. You can also help them pack food for Backpack Buddies and make blankets with Project Linus

Start the Weekend Early

This week at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Science, they will host a special Science Thursday with Forging a Sustainable Future: a Town Hall hosted by Greg Fishel.

Come visit Mordecai Historic Park for Free Friday. Take a guided tour of the Mordecai House and grounds, St. Mark's Chapel, and the birthplace of our 17th President, Andrew Johnson. Free tours only happen twice a year, so don't miss out!

The Halle Cultural Arts Center invites you to a Family Dance Friday evening. Traditional Dance Caller, Connie Carringer will teach fun dances for the whole family accompanied by a live old-time string band.

Art in the Evening returns this Friday night with live music by Ed Stephenson and the Paco Band. In addition to the 1933 movie 42nd Street, you can enjoy a lively, in-depth exploration entitled Infinite Possibilities with a Museum docent or take a Third Friday Tour.

Come on out to Downtown Durham to enjoy a Gallery crawl with live music and more for Third Friday.

Hill Street Community Center offers a monthly Family Movie Night. Join them this Friday for a night complete with popcorn and drinks.

Back to Nature

Take a hike out to the Holden Mill House Site Thursday afternoon with an Eno State Park Ranger.

Also Thursday afternoon, spend a Day at the Beech with an Umstead State Park Ranger as you learn about the American Beech Tree. Come back Sunday for a 100 S'more Years Event.

Raven Rock hosts a monthly Nature's Seedlings program for kids 3-7 on Friday morning. This month explores how Wildlife is Everywhere. Raven Rock State Park invites volunteers to lend a hand Saturday through Monday at morning Mountain Bike Trail Corridor Workdays.

Learn how to identify various species by looking at field markings and behaviors at Saturday's Winter Waterfowl Workshop at Lake Crabtree County Park.

Blue Jay County Park will host a Volunteer Workday Saturday afternoon. Help prepare craft and educational materials to be used at their upcoming programs or help with some outdoor work.

They will be exploring Winter Morning Wildlife Saturday on the American Tobacco Trail.

Come learn about Things that go bump in the Night: Nocturnal Animals of Falls Lake Sunday afternoon.

Crowder District Park's Family Feature Sunday will explore Fantastic Fossils.

This Sunday's Winter Hike at West Point on the Eno Park will be a Cabelands History Hike.

Celebrate National Popcorn Day at Yates Mill this Tuesday! Learn about all different varieties of corn and what gives popcorn that unique POP! Take part in a creative popcorn-themed craft, and enjoy some fresh popped popcorn.

More Fun!

Pop some popcorn and bring the kids over to the Holly Springs Cultural Center for their Saturday morning family movie. This weekend they feature the kid favorite, Madagascar. While you're at the Cultural Center, stop by the Winter Market.

The Raleigh Winterfest Ice Rink is still open in Downtown Raleigh's City Plaza. The rink will be open Monday and offers Two for Tuesday pricing specials, College Night every Wednesday, Stroller Skate this Thursday and DJ Fridays.

Grab your family for a friendly competition in the Sport of Science Saturday at Marbles Kids Museum's Family Science Olympiad. Come back Sunday for a PineCone Kid Jam.

The North Carolina Museum of Art invites you to bring the kids for a Family Fun Saturday entitled Specimen Lab, about the powers of observation.

Get your paintbrushes and cameras ready and try to capture the best images of Yates Mill and the surrounding park, then plan to enter this year's Mill as Muse Art and Photography Contest. Entries are due by February 1st.

Visit the exhibit Made Especially for You by Willie Kay in the lobby, then learn to stitch a patch or sew a button for yourself at Saturday's Make it, Take it at the NC museum of History.

Agent Fox will be the Tuesday Morning Movie at the Halle Cultural Arts Center.

Raleigh Sister Cities will kick off its 30th Anniversary, Yearlong Celebration Tuesday evening at the Mordecai Historic Park Visitors Center. Come learn about all the fun upcoming events including a craft beer collaboration and a visual arts exhibit. Raleigh's five Sister Cities are Xiangyang, China; Compiegne, France; Rostock, Germany; Nairobi, Kenya; and Kingston upon Hull, England.

Fun at the Fairgrounds

Coins, postcards and stamps (U.S., foreign, ancient, gold & silver) will be available all weekend at the Carolina Coin and Stamp Show.

Repticon, a reptile and exotic animal convention will be at the Fairgrounds Saturday and Sunday showcasing vendors from around the country offering live animals, animal supplies and related merchandise.
