Kick back, relax, grab a drink and a bite to eat at their Science Cafés. These informal science presentations are held in the Daily Planet Café at 7 p.m. Q & A from the audience is encouraged. Science Cafe: Art in the Labortory Events 7pm-8:30pm What common pursuits do artists and scientists have? What would an artist’s collaboration with a scientist look like? What would happen if an artist shared a lab bench with research scientists? Fiber artist Gabrielle Duggan and entomologist Adrian Smith asked these questions during the summer of 2017. The art installation “Architectural Intersections: Ants, Art, and Science,” currently on display in the Nature Research Center, is a product of their unusual collaboration. The art piece features Smith’s research into the underground architecture of ant societies. Duggan and Smith will present the intersections of art and science and their insights into how artists and scientists can collaborate. After the Science Cafe, the audience is welcomed up to the lab to view the art piece and meet the artist & scientist who created it. About the Speakers Dr. Adrian Smith is Head of the Evolutionary Biology & Behavior Research Lab at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences. He is a biologist interested in the behavior, evolution, and ecology of social insects with a particular interest in ants.
Gabrielle Duggan is a Visiting Assistant Professor at the College of Visual Arts and Design; University of North Texas. She is an artist utilizing the core values of fiber work — the unification of disparate elements through tension and balance — to explore social and interdisciplinary implications.
