Happy Memorial Day Weekend! May your weekend be full of fun, relaxation and cookouts! Memorial Day Observations


Memorial Day is about remembering and honoring those who served our nation. There will be a wonderful event on Monday keeping the meaning of the Holiday in mind. The Tar Heel Detachment of the Marine Corps League for the greater Raleigh area, will sponsor a Memorial Day Ceremony at the State Capitol grounds.

On Saturday, Bennett Place will also honor our fallen soldiers. They will have a living history event with living historians portraying soldiers representing the French and Indian War, American Revolution, War of 1812, American Civil War, Spanish American War, WWI, WWII, Vietnam War.
 
Fun at the Parks
 

Join the staff of Lake Crabtree and the Great Outdoor Provision Company for a Thursday afternoon Canoe & Kayak Demo on Lake Crabtree. Come back Saturday morning to look for some Beautiful Butterflies or to watch the Triangle Model Yacht Club race their boats.

 

Due to storms last week, the Zumba Jam Party to raise money for Augie's Quest has been rescheduled for Thursday night. Kick off your Memorial Day weekend with a night of great music and a great workout at Regency Park.
Marsh Creek Community Center will be looking for Lightning Bugs Friday night after dark. Come enjoy a hike and a craft.
Historic Preservation Society of Durham volunteers will lead an Architecture & the Urban Landscape Walking Tour through downtown highlighting the many architectural styles popular in the 20th century on Saturday morning.
Harness the power of the sun to create Solar-Powered Art with real historical artifacts from the Yates Mill collection, flowers, leaves, acorns and other natural objects. Historic Yates Mill Pond County Park will also be offering Mill Heritage & Local History Tours both Saturday & Sunday.
Bring your four-legged friends to the Raleigh City Museum for a Capital Canines walking tour of Raleigh! Museum staff will be leading a walking tour of downtown Raleigh with stops in parks and neighborhoods along the way to explore with your dog!
Eno River State Park invites you to join them for some Birdwatching Saturday morning, or a program on Bats and Echolocation Saturday afternoon. Right around the corner at Occoneechee Mountain, you can take a Geology Hike with a real geologist to the pyrophyllite quarry on Sunday or head back to Eno for a Turtle Talk with live specimens.
The State Fairgrounds will host a Bird Fair and a Regional Morgan Horse Show this weekend.
Are you looking to be a little more spontaneous? Pre-registration not really your thing? The Triangle has several beautiful lakes that offer boat rentals so you can enjoy the serenity of the water at your own pace. Bass Lake Park, Durant Nature Park, Bond Park, Lake Benson, Lake Crabtree Park, Lake Johnson Park, Umstead State Park and Lake Wheeler all offer seasonal boat rental and they are all open for business this weekend!
 
Music & Movies

Art in the Evening kicks off the holiday weekend at the North Carolina Museum of Art with live music by the Peter Lamb Trio and Channeling the Divine, a discussion of the role of the artist as a channel for the divine in creating works of art. Sunday afternoon, the museum will be celebrating traditional music from West Africa with Diali Cissokho.

Classic Beatles music will be the theme of this Friday's Laser Show at the Natural Science Center of Greensboro.
Movies by Moonlight at Booth Amphitheater at Regency Park Friday night will feature Crazy Stupid Love starring Julianne Moore, Ryan Gosling and Steve Carell.
In conjunction with the Pride and Passion Exhibit, the Holly Springs Library will feature the film, The Bingo Lingo Saturday morning.
The Wake Forest Parks & Recreation Department and the Wake Forest Kiwanis Club are teaming up to raise funds to build the Town's first sprayground at Holding Park with a Community Cookout Saturday afternoon.
The Six Sundays in Spring Concert Series continues this weekend at Carroll Joyner Park with Lakota John.
 
Holiday Weekend in Wilmington
 
If you are one of the lucky ones heading east to the coast, we wanted to let you know about some fun stuff going on this weekend in the Wilmington Area. The Battleship North Carolina will be hosting the Annual Memorial Day Observance. Remember those who gave their lives in service and honor veterans at a traditional Memorial Day Observance featuring a military guest speaker, an all-service Color Guard, a 21-gun salute by a Marine Corps Honor Guard, military band, Taps, and a memorial wreath cast onto the waters.

 

Wilmington's largest downtown arts festival returns for its 17th year this Memorial Day weekend. The Orange Street Arts Festival boasts the work of more than 55 artists, live entertainment and a food, beer, and wine tent.
Carolina Beach kicks off the season with concert and Fireworks by the Sea. Local band, Dog's Ave will be playing Friday night followed by a fabulous fireworks display. Sunday starts their movie season with Puss in Boots. Click through for the entire season of outdoor flicks.
While you are in the Wilmington area, you may want to check out the Fort Fisher Aquarium. Membership to the three North Carolina Aquariums and the North Carolina Zoo are reciprocal. Our favorite is Luna, the albino alligator.
