 For those of you heading back to college or traditional calendar school, your summer may be winding down. With plenty of fun activities throughout the Triangle, you can give the summer a grand farewell! 

Festivals & Special Events

 

Kick off your child's successful school career at Kickoff to Kindergarten at Marbles Kids Museum. Celebrate this major milestone with a real school bus, pretend lunch lines & PE classes, crafts and lots of great resources to answer your questions.
 
Hundreds of classic cars and trucks will be parked on or near historic Fayetteville Street, while plenty more show cars and vendors will be on display in the Raleigh Convention Center for Carolina Classics on the Capital. There is a charge to get into the festivities inside the Convention Center, but all the outdoor activities are free.
 
Northgate Park will host the ARC of Durham County's Community Fair for people with developmental disabilities and their families on Saturday.
 
The Raleigh Boat Show & Sale will be at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds this weekend.
 
The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences is hosting several fun events this week. A Taste of Science will be held every Thursday night beginning this week. This week's free, science-centric program will focus on Lightning Talks with local scientists, covering topics ranging from "Wonder Drugs in Nature" to "Giant Penguins in Peru."
 
On Tuesday night, the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences is delighted to present bonobo sanctuary founder Claudine Andre discussing protecting Bonobos in the Congo.
 
Tuesday also kicks off Migration Week  at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. Learn about tracking bird migration with satellite tags, migrating butterflies and more in the Daily Planet. Click through for the times of the presentations which will go through Friday.
 
Tuesday night is also Target $2 Tuesday Night at Marbles Kids Museum. On the Third Tuesday of every month, Marbles stays open late and drops their admission to $2. 
 
History Comes Alive
 
Come out to Mordecai Historic Park for Mordecai Free Friday. Tour an antebellum plantation house, and three other historic structures: a plantation kitchen, plantation chapel and The Birthplace of Andrew Johnson-17th president of the United States.
Join Historic Preservation Society of Durham docents Saturday morning on a Civil Rights Legacy Walking Tour  focusing on sites in downtown Durham that were important in the 1950s and '60s Civil Rights movement.
Join a member of the North Carolina Museum of History garden staff for an informal tour of the History of the Harvest exhibit lining Bicentennial Plaza Saturday morning.
Relive history and experience the traditional way corn was ground into meal and wheat into flour, using water power, simple machines & millstones. The Historic Yates Mill Corn Grinding Tours are a great opportunity to see the complex mill in operation.
Meet Plenair Painters (artists who work outside) and try your hand at working with water-colors at Historic Yates Mill Pond Saturday morning.
 
 Movies & Concerts
 
Did you know that the Holly Springs Cultural Center sponsors a Community Game Day on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of every month? Come play board games and socialize with other adults.
 
This Thursday's Locally Grown Movie in Chapel Hiil will be Vertigo. Bring the whole family to enjoy free popcorn, crafts, activities, trivia & costume contests.
 
The first Concert in the Courtyard at the Joel Lane Museum House will feature the Southern String Band, a group of nine friends in Raleigh, NC, who plays old-time string-band music for fun.This Thursday night concert does have an admission fee.
 
The Music off Main Concert Series continues this Thursday night down in Garner with a concert by BrickHouse.
 
Clay Street After Work continues Friday night in Downtown Mebane with a free concert by Crossover Drive.
 
Enjoy Third Friday in Downtown Durham with a gallery crawl, live music and special events throughout the downtown.
 
Friday night's Art in the Evening at the North Carolina Museum of Art will feature the band Side Car Social Club and a in-depth exploration of the Dog Days of Summer. Saturday evening, the Museum will be showing the 2011 movie, The Tree of Life starring Brad Pitt & Sean Penn.
 
Friday night's Music on the Lawn concert at the American Tobacco Campus will present Bill & Libby Hicks.
 
The Family Movie paying Saturday morning at the Holly Springs Cultural Center will be The Tale of Despereaux.
 
The movie Rio will be playing under the stars Saturday night at Southern Boundaries Park.
 
Saturday is Family Movie Night at Carroll Joyner Park, too. Wake Forest Parks & Rec and the Girl Scouts are celebrating the Girls Scouts' 100th anniversary with a sing along and the movie A Dolphins Tale. Admission is free, but the Girl Scouts will be accepting pet supply donations.
 
Last Call will perform this week's Sunday in the Park Concert at Lake Johnson Park.
Wednesday's Family Films at the North Carolina Museum of Art will focus on films exploring stories of self. Come early to enjoy the Drop-In Studio
 
At the Parks
 

The Museum of Life and Science invites you to a Black Light Insect Hunt after dark Friday. Specially installed black lights will attract insects to screens set up along the boardwalk so you get a great view of whats flying around at night.

Join the Occoneechee Mountain Ranger for a Twilight Hike. You will walk about 11/2 miles around the Occoneechee ponds and the Chestnut Oak Trail.

You can become part of the Monarch Larva Monitoring Project! Come on out to Prairie Ridge Ecostation Friday morning to learn how you can get involved collecting data that is used to monitor monarch butterflies in North America.

Learn to find and Identify creatures living in the water while you Explore the River at Eno River State Park Saturday morning. Saturday night you can learn all about Bats of the Eno. Learn to Play Possum on Sunday as well as the hitory and biology of the animal.

Come on over to Blue Jay Point County Park and let the whole family explore Nature Journaling.

Get the The Buzz on Bees Saturday at Historic Yates Mill County Park. You will explore how bees are beneficial, their roles in the hive, and how they make honey. You will even get to taste honey from different parts of the country and meet a beekeeper!
