 It looks like we are going to have a beautiful, sunny weekend. With Fall right around the corner, this weekend officially kicks off our fantastic festival season!

The Science Cafe returns to the North Carolina Museum of Natural Science's Daily Planet Café Thursday evening with Meteorologist Nate Johnson discussing Monster Storms - Hurricanes in North Carolina.
 
Head on over to the State Farmers Market in Raleigh at lunchtime Friday for Grape Day. There will be grape samples, wine tasting and lots of free recipes.
 
First Friday Kicks Off the Weekend
 
First Friday means Family Fun Night at Bass Lake Park. Start the evening with arts & crafts, live animals and some fishing. Then, join kid favorite Trish Miller for a childrens' concert. Stay after the concert and join a Bass Lake Park Naturalist for some stargazing and paddling in the Park After Dark.
 
Lake Benson invites you to join them for the Family Flick, Lorax under the stars.
 
The North Carolina Museum of Art will be screening The Godfather on Friday night and The Godfather: Part II on Saturday. Before the movie Friday night, you are invited to Meet Your Museum on a tour of the 164-acre campus, two buildings, an amphitheater, a park, and gardens or join in on an art exploration of The Four Seasons.
 
First Friday at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences just gets better with extended hours at both the main museum and the Nature Research Center. Teens are invited to come early for a Teen Science Cafe with "Canopy" Meg Lowman and get face-to-face with bark beetles. "War of the Insects" will be the sci-fi flick and you are invited to an opening reception for painter Janette Hopper in the Nature Art Gallery.
 
Raleigh also boasts the First Friday Gallery Walk, extended hours at Marbles Kids Museum and the Reopening of the Raleigh City Museum.
 
The BackBeat  will be playing Beatles and 60"s rock & roll over at City Market.
 
WUNC's Back Porch Music brings the Red Clay Ramblers to the American Tobacco Campus Amphitheatre.
 
Festivals and Fun
 
The Duke Homestead Historic Site will celebrate the harvesting season for tobacco with the Harvest and Hornworm Festival. Come see costumed interpreters demonstrate tobacco harvesting, stringing, and curing. You can also witness the sounds of the only tobacco auction left in Durham.
 
Saturday is Colonial Kids Day in Historic Hillsborough. Join them for colonial games, costume corner, book nook, butter churning, quill writing, and colonial quilt making.
 
Promoted by the country's oldest gourd society, theAnnual North Carolina Gourd Arts & Crafts Festival features more than 70 growing, crafting, and artistic competitive categories, as well as workshops and vendors of gourd crafts, dried gourds, and gourd crafting supplies.
 
The State Fairgrounds will also host a Tropical Fish Auction, the Fall RV Sale, and a Coin & Currency Show.
 
La Fiesta del Pueblo comes to Moore Square and Marbles Kids Museum on Sunday. The event will feature live music, dance performances, Latin American cuisine and children"s activities.
 
Music, Movies & History
 
The Hopscotch Music Festivalstarts Thursday and runs through Saturday with 175 bands playing at 15 different venues. The Main concerts do require tickets, but the festival also includes some free concerts and panels.
 
Enjoy the 1939 film, Gone with the Wind, including a preshow talk to examine producer David O. Selznick's attempt to respond to conflicting views of the Civil War, the South, and slavery at the North Carolina Museum of History Saturday afternoon.
Also at the North Carolina Museum of History Saturday morning, you can take a guided tour of the History of the Harvest exhibit in the gardens lining Bicentennial Plaza.
 
Durham will also be exploring local history Saturday morning through a Tobacco Heritage Walking Tour.
 
Join master storteller Ms E.J. Stewart as she takes participants on a nostalgic trip back to what was once a staple of the North Carolina agriculture landscape and invites all to share their culture, tell part of their story or simply Sit-a-spell at Mordecai Historic Park Saturday afternoon.
 
Milo and Otis will be the featured flick Saturday morning at the Holly Springs Cultural Center.
 
The Sertoma Arts Center presents an Opening Reception for artists Adrienne DiFranco, Mark Wroblewski, Larry Dean and Heather Bowler on Sunday afteernoon. The works will remain on dispaly through the month of September.
 
The Laura Ridgeway with Capital Transit will be the featured band for the Sunday in the Park Concert Series at Lake Wheeler Park.
 
The North Carolina Symphony presents a free Pops in the City concert on Sunday evening at the Raleigh Amphitheater.
 
Lots More to do in the Parks
 
The state parks have plenty of fun programs this weekend. Eno River State Park invites you to explore the restored, historicPiper-Cox Houseor learn about theCommon Toad. Come back Sunday and learn how the park has Gone Batty.
 
Kids are invited to try their hand at fishing through the guidance of the C.A.S.T. (Catch A Sure Thing!) program at Jordan Lake State Recreation Area Saturday morning.
 
Its a great time of year to head over to Yates Mill Historic Park and take one of their Mill Heritage & Local History Tours of the fully restored mill.
 
Raven Rock State Park invites you to volunteer your time and energy for a Volunteer Work Day Saturday morning.
 
Join dragonfly researcher Chris Goforth on a tour of the aquatic habitats of Prairie Ridge Ecostation on Saturday for a Dragonfly Walk.
 
Bring the whole family out to Durant Nature Park on Saturday to search for Nature's Cache. You'll have fun combining technology with nature as you use GPS units to help find hidden natural items in the woods.
 
There are a few more fun events next week. Bring your kids to Umstead State Park Monday afternoon to learn how they can Be a Junior Ranger. On Tuesday, you can take a Walk Through the Seasons at Prairie Ridge Field Station. On Wednesday night, you are invited to Eno River State Park for some summer Star Gazing.
