 The leaves are all coming down quickly now. I hope you have had a chance to get out and enjoy the crisp air, sunshine and incredible fall colors. This weekend we observe Veterans Day. Downtown Raleigh will commemorate the holiday with a Veterans Day Parade followed by a wreath laying and ceremony on Saturday. The Music and displays will focus on this year's theme, Welcome Home Iraq Veterans!
 
Come to the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial Site at Edison Johnson Recreation Center on Saturday to share your memories and enjoy some music! Remembrance Day will give you an opportunity to remember the men and women who fought for our country.
 
Harris Lake County Park Salutes our Veterans by offering free admission for Veterans and their families on a Veteran's Day Fall Family Hay Ride on Sunday afternoon. While you are there, scan the QR Code by the restrooms to log in to the ParkGeek Passport Challenge!
 
Holly Springs invites you to an observance at Veterans Park on Monday. Join local Boy Scouts and singer Wanda Holloway.
 
The Army, Air Force and Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps at UNC invites you to join them for a Veterans Day Ceremony on Monday. This year's speaker will be retired Navy Commander Marv McWherter.
 
Celebrate Veterans Day at Marbles with patriotic activities all-day long like Paper Airplane Launch, Mentos Rocket Salute and a Stars & Stripes Collage. Active military and their families will receive $1 off museum admission, $1 off IMAX documentaries and $2 off IMAX features. Fall Fun Throughout  the Triangle

November is Pecan Pickin' Month at Historic Oak View County Park. The grove has been scoured pretty well in the first few days of the month, but feel free to come on out and harvest a few pecans for yourself. In addition to the Pecans, Historic Oak View County Park is also a ParkGeek Passport Challenge Destination. The park offers a wonderful glimpse into North Carolina's agricultural past.

Join the staff of the American Tobacco Trail Friday night for a Fall Night Hike and explore what creatures live in the park during the fall and who comes out at night. While there, scan and log into the ParkGeek Passport Challenge!
 
On top of the fabulous fall veggies and fruits featured every day at the NC State Farmers Market in Raleigh, this weekend brings a Fall Craft Fair.
 
Enjoy a Fall Hay Ride at Harris Lake as you travel the back roads of the park. On this hayride you will focus on the colors of fall. After collecting fall leaves and seeds on the ride, you can make a collage back at the shelter to showcase your collection.
 
Decorate your home for the holidays and find fabulous gifts for friends, including ornaments, gourd bird houses, jewelry, stationery, knitted goods and nature-focused gifts on Saturday at the Duke Gardens Holiday Craft Fair. Come back to the Gardens Sunday for Autumn Fun Day.
 
Great Outdoor Fun for the Whole Family
 
Come discover which arachnids call the Crowder Park home through crafts, stories and a special spider hunt during a Crowder by Night Program: Spider Spectacular. Bring your flashlight to find the ParkGeek Passport Challenge Destination near the restrooms at the big playground.
 
Join rangers at Eno River State Park Saturday to "Experience" Trees in the park, tour the restored Piper-Cox Home and hear about its inhabitants and pioneer life, do some Bird Watching or explore the Sanders P. Cox & Breeze Family Homesteads.
 
Jordan Lake State Recreation Area invites you to join them for some Bird Watching and a Nature Hike on Saturday.
 
Join rangers at Lake Michie Saturday evening as they enjoy the Beauty of Lake Michie at sunset by boat.
 
Historic Yates Mill Pond County Park, a ParkGeek Passport Destination, is the perfect venue for that fall family picture. While you are there, take a Mill Heritage & Local History Tour and get a peek inside the fully restored mill and see how power is transferred from the mill's waterwheel to its grist-milling machinery. On Saturday, your kids can take a History Detective Tour. Come back to Yates Mill Tuesday afternoon to learn all about Bread - A Slice of Science.
 
Learn the symbols North Carolina has chosen to represent itself in nature like our state flower, the Dogwood during a program Saturday at Lake Crabtree County Park about NC Mascots
 
Join naturalists at West Point on the Eno Saturday on this hike through the forest as you learn about the lives of Black Bears in North Carolina.
 
Join a park Ranger at Umstead Park Wednesday morning to make a Hiking Stick and then go for a short hike on one of the parks trails.
 
Also Wednesday, the Walnut Creek Wetland Center invites kids to learn about Leave no Trace through the PEAK curriculum a fun series of hands-on activities.
 
Art Culture & Music at the Museums
 
 The Science Cafe Thursday evening at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences will feature Lightning Talks with Brian Malow. Remember the museum stays open late every Thursday night and you can see the Titanic at a discounted price after 5pm.
 
Kick off your weekend with several events at the North Carolina Museum of Art. Art in the Evening returns with live music by the Gravy Boys. The featured fall film will be the 1944 flick Double Indemnity and you are invited to an in-depth exploration of how Time Stands Still or team up with your friends and test your knowledge at a Pub-Style Trivia Night.
 
Bring the kids back to the Art Museum Saturday for a Family Fun Saturday event where you will learn to Draw from Observation.
 
The Holly Springs Cultural Center will feature Finding Nemo as their Free Family Movie on Saturday morning.
 
Blues singer-musician George Higgs is known for his powerful harmonica playing and propulsive guitar style and he will be bringing it all to the North Carolina Museum of History for a Music of the Carolinas concert Sunday afternoon.
 
Take a few minutes out of your day Tuesday and help the Red Cross with the gift of Life. The Red Cross Blood Drive at the American Tobacco Campus can accomodate both walk ins and scheduled appointments.
 
Mark your calendars for a multi-author reading of 27 Views of Durham: The Bull City in Prose & Poetry at the Burwell School Historic Site on Wednesday evening.
 
Historian Ernest Dollar will reveal how soldiers and civilians grappled with victory, defeat, ruin, and reunion towards the end of the Civil War Wednesday night at the Halle Cultural Arts Center.
 
What to do at the Fairgrounds
 
 Even though the State Fair is packed up for another year, there is plenty going on at the Fairgrounds. This weekend brings the return of the Duke Children's Hospital Benefit Hunter Horse Show at the Hunt Horse Complex. The event features six days of competition by horses and their riders from the United States and Canada. In addition to competition, the show offers all ages a behind-the-scenes look at how horses are cared for, trained and shown. Youngsters can see the horses in their stalls in the tents and five permanent barns on the complex grounds.
 
The Carolina Collector Auto Fest will include a swap meet with more than 125 vendors, car corral for buying and selling and Car/Truck shows.
