The Fun Starts Early
 
Come to the Burwell School Historic Site Thursday evening for an Evening of Music with Tim Duffy and accompaniment by Ironing Board Sam.

 

Author Stuart Firestein will be discussing his book Ignorance: How it Drives Science at Thursday night's Science Cafe at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences. The world's leading expert on dolphin intelligence, Diana Reiss will present a Science Connections Lecture on Friday evening about her book, The Dolphin in the Mirror.
Art in the Evening returns Friday night to the North Carolina Museum of Art with live music by Ed Stephenson and the Paco Band Trio and the 1936 film, My Man Godfrey. You can also join them for Friday Night Sound Bites that focus on works of art that convey the artist's love and admiration in unexpected ways.
 
Rock out to the tunes of Led Zeppelin as a spectacular laser light show spans the 40 foot dome OmniSphere Theater to kick off the Weekend Friday night at the Natural Science Center of Greensboro.
 
Artists, food vendors, musicians and craftspeople will set up their wares on the sidewalks around the courthouse in Downtown Historic Hillsborough for the Last Friday Art Walk.

History Comes Alive
 
Join historians to examine the Emancipation Proclamation and the impact it had during the time of the American Civil War on Saturday at the Bennett Place Historic Site.

 

On the 253rd Anniversary of the attack on Fort Dobbs, re-enactors representing the provincial garrison and Cherokee warriors will present on-going interpretation of 18th Century camp life, as well as scheduled musket and cannon firing demonstrations. The Living History Weekend will take place both Saturday and Sunday.
 
Explore the lives and accomplishments of African American North Carolinians from the antebellum period to the Civil Rights on a guided African American History Tour on Saturday afternoon at the North Carolina Museum of History.
 
Seven families called Harris Lake "home" from the 1880s to the 1970s. Come on out to Harris Lake County Park on Sunday to take a History Hayride tour of the old home sites and fields left by these farmers, listen to personal stories from those that lived here and search for a part of Wake County"s past.

UNC-TV is hosting a 2013 PBS KIDS GO! Writers Contest Event at Marbles. Learn about the contest, meet UNC-TV"s own Read-a-roo, Super Why, Wonder Red, Woofster from SuperWhy!, Wordgirl, Betsy from Betsy"s Kindergarten Adventures, Charles the Chef and other special guests. Plus, special appearances by Mr. McFeely from Mister Roger"s Neighborhood and Daniel Tiger"s Neighborhood and Kelsey Barberio, Miss North Carolina Teen USA.

 

Applause! Cary Youth Theatre presents Theatrical Passport Saturday afternoon at the Cary Arts Center. Take a quick trip through theatre history and enjoy scenes based in performance styles from around the world.
 
The Hunchback of Notre Dame will be the featured flick for Movies @ Your Library at the Holly Springs Cultural Center Saturday morning.
 
Come back to Marbles Kids Museum on Sunday to enjoy another edition of Family Fit with special guests, the Salem Skip-its and a Green Energy Workshop featuring paper airplanes.
 
Happenings at the Parks
 
Join them at Walnut Creek Wetland Center Saturday to learn some drawing techniques and spend time outside writing and drawing as you prepare to do some Nature Journaling.

 

Bring your kids to Umstead State Park Saturday to learn how to become a Junior Ranger. Umstead will also be exploring attracting Backyard Birds.
 
Due to popular demand, Lake Crabtree County Park is offering their popular Orienteering once again this Sunday. Bring the whole family to learn how to find your way using only a compass and map.
 
Every Sunday afternoon, West Point on the Eno offers guided hikes. This weekend the hike will travel out the Laurel Bluffs Trail to explore lovely views of the river from high, rocky bluffs as well as habitat that supports a population of Mountain Laurel.
 
Kids will explore conservation tips and tricks on how to clean up our community while they learn to make paper, harness the power of the sun to cook food and participate in other experiments on reducing, reusing and recycling during Home School Days: Energy Stars on Monday at Historic Yates Mill County Park.
 
Explore the sights and sounds of nature after dark for some Full Moon Fun Wednesday night at Harris Lake County Park. Try to reel in fish under the stars, look for the man in the moon and finish the evening roasting S'mores.
