This weekend you can celebrate Earth Day throughout the Triangle. The Highlight of this weekend's events is the Grand Re-opening of the Historic Carousel at Chavis Community Park. The festivities will include a dedication ceremony, music, food, activities, and an opportunity to provide input on the vision of and future of John Chavis Memorial Park.

The fun starts with this Thursday's Science Cafe at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences, it will be all about Ants.

Take advantage of this beautiful spring weather and take a Family Walk in the Park Thursday evening at Durant Nature Park.

 
Great Outdoor Provision Company will be out at Lake Crabtree County Park Thursday evening hosting a Boat Demo.
 
Thursday night is also Ladies Night Out in Downtown Hillsborough. There will be a Women's Power Networking event, shopping, food, raffles and the return of the Hats Off to Spring contest.

Celebrate Earth Day

Bring the whole family to the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences on Saturday to learn all about the Earth and living sustainably at the Planet Earth Celebration. The hands on event will have something for everybody from information on composting and reducing your carbon footprint to a Kids Zone and green technology. ParkGeek will be there with a new origami craft that will leave you with something to grow!

HerbFest comes back to Wake Forest's Festival Park for two weekends of free entertainment, animal petting, live bands, and the largest selection of herbs and perennials for your yard. Click through for the schedule.
 
The NC Zoo will celebrate Earth Day with a Party for the Planet. Dance to African drums and be in a giant puppet parade while discovering new ways to help take care of the earth.
 
Marbles Kids Museum invites you to join them for Earth Day and the Grand opening of their Green Mural. The celebration will include planting their garden, making recycled crafts, an exploration into solar energy and Earth Volleyball.
 
The Downtown Cary Farmers Market will be celebrating Earth Day with crafts, guest speakers, demonstrations and the Musical Guest, Irresolved.
 
Take an Earth Day Tour of Annie Louise Wilkerson, MD Nature Preserve Park and go behind the scenes to peek at their facilities while you learn how they save water and energy Saturday afternoon.
 
Head over to Durham Central Park on Sunday for the Durham Earth Day Festival. The event promises something for everyone with live music, the Eco Lounge, an Earth Day Parade, a kids area, an Earth Art Market, and a Sustainability Expo.
 
The Town of Wake Forest will host a special Earth Day Celebration on Monday highlighting the Town's "Think Green" initiative and webpage.
 
The Town of Holly Springs will also host an Earth Day Open House with the Department of Recreation and Parks on Monday at the Cultural Center.
 
History, Movies, Music & Art
 
Historic Oak View County Park is hosting the traveling exhibit, Lincoln: The Constitution and the Civil War. Friday night is the opening evening of the exhibition's run and will include a reception and a guest lecture by Michelle Lanier from the North Carolina Office of Archives and History about the role of African Americans in the Civil War.
Friday night at the NC Museum of Art features Art in the Evening with the band The Beast, Docent-Led Tours of Rococo Art, Sound Bites about the gods and goddesses of Mount Olympus and the 1985 film starring Daniel Day-Lewis, A Room with a View. Bring the kids back Saturday for a special tour of the 0 to 60 exhibition and an art project.
Its time for Third Friday in Downtown Durham. Come on out to enjoy the gallery crawl, live music and festivities.
 
A showcase of the American Civil War throughout History and how it has been portrayed through photography, art, and journalism will be on display this weekend at Bennett Place Historic Site. Historians, artists, and authors will share their artwork, books, and exhibits on how the war has been viewed and preserved. Military and civilian living historians will be encamped around the Bennett Farm demonstrating life in April 1865.
 
You can step back into history at Yates Mill this weekend, too. Travel back to 1863 with 19th century costumed interpreters and watch the millstones at work grinding corn into meal on a Corn Grinding Tour. As a bonus on Saturday, you can try on some colonial clothes, and play a round or two of "They Wore WHAT?!" during Dressing Up and Down at Yates Mill.
 
Join a Harris Lake County Park Ranger on Saturday for a guided hike of the Womble Interpretive History Trail and learn about one of the families that lived on the property before it became a park.
 
The fun starts early at Holly Springs Cultural Center Saturday morning. Come enjoy a Clown Show with Calvin Klown and then stay for the movie Rio. Come back Monday morning to see the movie Pocahontas.
The State Fairgrounds boasts the Southern Bridal Show and a Horse Show this weekend.
 
Students from NC Theatre will be at Marbles Sunday for an interactive performance of Family Glee.
 
The Halle Cultural Arts Center will host A Field of Teacups, a celebration of Surrealism in Poetry and the Visual Arts-Poetry Reading and Reception on Sunday afternoon.

Park Pograms

Saturday is Children's Day at Bond Park. Come enjoy a wide assortment kid friendly activities like dancing, music performances, storytelling, balloons artists, magicians, games & crafts!

Walk/Run/Bike for Umstead is an annual fundraiser that offers a great day on the park trails, listening to great music, and enjoying children activities.
 
Practice your bird identification skills by joining NC State Park Ranger Education and Interpretation specialist, Brian Bockhahn for a Spring Bird Identification Workshop at beautiful Durant Nature Park all day Friday.
 
Its another Citizen Science Saturday at Prairie Ridge. These Saturday morning adventures will introduce you to a citizen science project and enlist your help collecting and entering data as you enjoy a walk around the grounds with one of their naturalists. Tuesday morning you are invited to join them for a Walk Through the Seasons.
 
Sunday's Spring Hike at West Point on the Eno will explore the Wildfllowers blooming along the Pump Station Trail. They will be on the lookout for a Ladyslipper orchid!

Farmers Markets are Opening

Many of the Triangle Farmer's Markets are open or have transitioned to their summer schedules. The last few will be opening the first weekend in May. To find a market near you, just go to the Event Search on ParkGeek.com and type in Farmers Market.

 

The Raleigh Downtown Farmers Market kicks off the season this Wednesday with a Pig Pickin' from the Pit! Take a lunchtime break and check out the market's 4th season at City Plaza.
