What a greet weekend this is looking to be. There is a wide variety of concerts, movies, park events and historical programs throughout the weekend.

Second Saturday is back at the State Historic Sites for the third and last installment of the summer.
 
In Downtown Raleigh, the State Capitol will feature an Old State Library Tour. Come see how historians learn about the past by examining old documents.
 
Also in Downtown Raleigh, the North Carolina Museum of History will focus on Knitting. See knitter Catherine Bolen turn yarn into useful objects, from baby caps to purses to afghans. You can make your own bracelet by weaving stitches in a Make it, Take it event.
 
The North Carolina Museum of Art joins in on Second Saturdays with a Family Fun Saturday. This week's installment will invite families to take a gallery tour and participate in a workshop exploring Animals of Ancient Egypt. They will also be offering Special Family Tours both Saturday & Sunday.
 
Tales of the Tar Heel State will be featured at Bennett Place Historic Site. Join authors and storytellers as they share a variety of history, folklore and tradition.
 
Bentonville State Historic Site will host Civil War Camp Life. Period-costumed living historians will demonstrate how soldiers made meals, maintained their weapons and uniforms, trained for battle, and much more.
 
Enjoy music, dancing, historical crafts, and activities and games at Duke Homestead's Summer Children's Festival.
 
Second Saturday extends outside the Triangle, too. Join volunteers stationed throughout the Battleship North Carolina for Battleship 101 and learn all about sea life including gunnery, radar, sickbay, galley, engineering and daily shipboard life. As a special treat, the Carolina Living History Guild members will set up displays that highlight the history of the USS North Carolina and the CSS North Carolina during the American Civil War including steam engineering, ironclad ship construction, navigation, small arms of the US and CS navies, and the "arts of the sailor."
 
Tryon Palace will Celebrate the Old North State. Join them as they celebrate the "land of the long leaf pine" in this special fun filled day. Free activities include garden admission, colonial games in the Palace courtyard, attendance to their special "Making of the State" interactive theater program, a site-wide North Carolina Scavenger Hunt, and a North Carolina themed kids' craft activity .
 
Fort Fisher will explore Information Technology. Come learn how communications in the Civil War worked by creating secure networks using tools like signal flags and cipher disks.
 
Celebrations & Family Festivals
 
The Museum of Life and Science will be celebrating Engineers Day Saturday with a day of hands-on engineering activities.
Fire Departments from around the state will attend North Carolina's Main Street Fire Truck Parade in Downtown Raleigh Saturday morning. Units will include modern and antique apparatus, pipe and drum bands and fire department honor guards. After the parade, all the equipment will be available to check out and for picture opportunities. Start the fun early for lunch on Friday at City Plaza for the South Atlantic Fire Rescue Expo BBQ Cookoff. The fundraiser for the North Carolina Firefighters Fund will bring firefighters from across the state to BBQ their best.
 
Saturday is Family Fun Day in Historic Hillsborough. The event will feature guided history tours, children's activities, a farmers market, shopping, and dining.
 
Over 40 food trucks will be ready and waiting to serve you a wide assortment of gastric delights on Sunday in Downtown Raleigh for another Food Truck Rodeo.
 
The State Fairgrounds will host the Southern Bridal Show and Expo both Saturday and Sunday.
 
This Wednesday the annual Cheese Please Festival returns to the Raleigh Downtown Farmers Market. Come enjoy a wide selection of the area"s finest cheese and cheese makers, a grilled cheese cook-off, local cheese sampling, live music by the Hopscotch Music Festival, local lunch options, and kids activities.
 
Concerts & Culture

Oak City 7, the Thursday night concert series in Downtown Raleigh returns this week with performances by Spiralfire, Wesley Wolfe, The Broadcast and Big Something.

Thursday is the last "Find Your Cool" Summer Concert of the season at the CCB Plaza. Come enjoy the West African beat of the band Khalat Africa featuring Diali Cissokho.
 
Five poets will be on hand Thursday night at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences for another installment of Poetry Scope at the Science Cafe. Also Thursday night, the Museum will celebrate the work of scientific illustrator and visionary artist Renaldo Kuhler with a screening of the film Rocaterrania. Shark Quest, the eclectic Triangle-area band that provided the musical score for "Rocaterrania" will play a short set before the film.
 
The Will McBride Group will be playing jazz-influenced rock/pop at Friday night's Summer at the Springs Outdoor Concert in Holly Springs. In case of rain, the concerts move indoors.
 
Friday's Art in the Evening at the North Carolina Museum of Art will include live music, extended hours and special small plates and beverages. This week's Sound Bite will explore, the French Vogue for All Things Japanese.
Art After Dark is back to downtown Fuquay-Varina. Click through for the schedule of events from live music to kids activities.
 
The streets of Downtown Wake Forest will come alive with food, merchants and music Friday night for Art After Hours.
 
Carrboro also enjoys a night of live music and art related entertainment for their 2nd Friday Artwalkwalk.
 
The Sertoma Amphitheater will host American Piedmont blues guitarist, singer, and songwriter John Dee Holeman for a Saturday evening concert.
 
Local singer songwriter Brooke Hatala will be the featured musician at this week's Sunday in the Park Concert at Fred Fletcher Park.
 
The American Tobacco Campus will bring The Embers to the stage for a Midweek Music Series Concert Wednesday evening.
 
Movies
 
This Thursday's Locally Grown Movie in Chapel Hill will feature the kid favorite from 1990, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

 

Come on out to the NC Museum of Art's amphitheater on Friday night to see the powerful film Glory starring Matthew Broderick, Denzel Washington, Cary Elwes and Morgan Freeman. Saturday night, the Museum will be showing the equally moving film Lincoln starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Sally Field, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Tommy Lee Jones.
 
The 2010 film Secretariat starring Diane Lane, John Malkovich and Scott Glenn will be playing Friday night at Booth Amphitheater at Regency Park.
Chicken Little will be playing Saturday morning at the Holly Springs Cultural Center. Come back Monday morning for Oz the Great and Powerful.
 
This Wednesday's Summer Family Films at the North Carolina Museum of Art will be a collection of short, whimsical films created by design students from N.C. State University and featured in NCSU's 2012 Animation Fest. Come early or stay late for a Drop in Studio.

Come on down to Bass Lake Park Friday night for a fun night of Family Bingo.

 

The State Parks are hopping this time of year. Eno River State Park will host an Open House at the Historic Piper Cox House and Beginning Fishing on Saturday. Nearby, they will be looking for Dragonflies at Occoneechee Mountain Saturday afternoon. Learn the art of Fly Fishing or go Fishing with the Naturalist Sunday at Eno River.
 
Morehead Planetarium astronomers will be at Jordan Lake State Recreation Area Saturday after dark for an Astronomy Viewing Session.
 
They will be exploring the native Snakes of North Carolina on Saturday afternoon at William B. Umstead State Park.
 
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Rangers will be special guests at Falls Lake State Recreation Area Sunday to share what they know about the amazing adaptations of some of our local Birds of Prey.
 
Historic Yates Mill Pond County Park will be offering Saturday at the Old Mill Tours and Mill Heritage & Local History Tours on Sunday. Explore the inner workings of the mill itself and witness the power of water as it turns the milling machinery.
 
Durham's tobacco heritage is explored through the stories and experiences of Durham residents during Saturday morning's Tobacco Heritage Walking Tour starting at Durham Central Park
 
The whole family is invited to Take a Hike at Harris Lake County Park Saturday evening. The hike will explore all the critters that live in the park. Come back Sunday to learn all about Turtles.
 
Join the rangers at Crowder District Park for their monthly Service Saturday and lend a hand with one of their many projects. They will also hold a Volunteer in Parks Interest Session on Saturday at Historic Yates Mill County Park. Come back to Crowder Park Sunday for a drop in Family Pond Study to discover the life cycle of dragonflies.
 
Along with their weekly Citizen Science Saturday, Prairie Ridge Ecostation invites you to take a Dragonfly Walk.
