The Fun Starts Early
Thursday at the NC State Farmers Market is Apple Day. Come on out at lunch to try some free apple samples and apple dessert samples. Pick up some fall recipes and fresh NC apples while you are there.
Thursday evening, the NC Museum of Natural Sciences hosts a Science Cafe all about Science Trivia.
Art of Cool @ The Stack is back Thursday night on the American Tobacco Campus with an evening concert by Marcus Anderson. Come back Friday night for a Center Stage Music Series concert featuring Bluegrass Legends IIIrd Tyme Out & Mipso
Friday night, head over to City Market and enjoy a Music on the Market Concert featuring the band Day 2 and a Pumpkin Sale to benefit the Capital City Clauses and the Salvation Army of Wake County.
Along with extended hours at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences and the Nature Research Center, First Friday treats visitors to live music by CityFolk, an opening reception for Natural Beauties and a Teen Science Café about racoons. This month's classic sci-fi flick will be October Sky.
Cary's Seven O'clock Rock Series returns Friday night for Latin Night with Orquesta GarDel.
Want to enjoy a First Friday out in the crisp fall air? Crowder District Park invites you to come to Crowder By Night for Spooky Spiders.
Harris Lake County Park invites you to join them for a leisurely fall stroll after dark on a Friday night Evening Exploration.
Bass Lake Park kicks off the weekend with Family Fun Night. First make arts & crafts, meet a live animal, or borrow a fishing pole! Then end the night with singer and storyteller Trish Miller or Dan the Magic Man.
Fall Festivals
Heritage Day at Oak View County Park is everything an old time fair should be. Live entertainment, heritage crafts, re-enactors, hay rides, historic farm equipment, cane pole fishing, festival foods and lots of live animals! Come on out and cheer on the 4-H kids as they compete for ribbons. Come find ParkGeek at the Festival and let us know how ParkGeek is working for you.
Bass Lake Day celebrates environmental education with interactive displays and exhibits about North Carolina's environment. Learn about soil types and water quality, touch pelts from a variety of our native critters and explore the wide diversity of aquatic life we enjoy. The evening will end with a concert.
Saturday also boasts Heritage Day at Jordan Lake State Recreation Area. The annual fall festival includes hands on activities, live entertainment, exhibits and live demonstrations.
In celebrating Hayti's legacy, the annual Phoenix Fest will again live up to its reputation as Durham"s funkiest street music festival on Saturday
The Fox 50 Family Fest comes to Pullen Park Saturday and the American Tobacco Campus Sunday. Both locations will be family-friendly events. Check out this years attractions like Zu, the all new interactive vehicle, Noah's Landing, field games and family activities and some of your favorite mascots. Sunday's event will also host the Great American Tobacco Duck Race.
Durham is also going to the dogs Sunday for Woofstock. The event at Duham's Central Park will feature canine demonstrations, games, contests, live music, adoption opportunities, a pet market and a Kid's Zone.
Sunday brings the annual Festifall to Downtown Chapel Hill. One of North Carolina's longest running events, there will be over 100 area and regional artists showcased along with a wide variety of live music, poetry and hands on art opportunities.
Apex will be celebrating Party in the Peak on Sunday with live music, fun kids activities, food trucks and free ice cream!
Music, History & Culture
Karen Kettering of Sotheby's Russian Art Department will be at the North Carolina Museum of History Friday afternoon to conduct free object identification sessions (up to three Russia-related objects) for museum visitors.
This months Science Saturday at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences will discuss Care Before Birth: In Utero Treatment of Birth Defects.
The Raleigh City Museum continues their Saturday morning Raleigh Reads series this weekend with Ten Miles Past Normal by Frances Dowell. The free program includes various visits from authors and readings followed by crafts and snacks.
The Global Cardboard Challenge at the Museum of Life and Science goes through Saturday. Use their supplies to create and construct your own addition to their Colossal Cardboard Imagination Machine.
Jill Sundie will present a lecture entitled Peacocks and Porsches on Saturday at the North Carolina Museum of Art to discuss what motivates people to consume luxury products. While you are at the Art Museum, you can also take a Meet Your Museum Tour and get an introduction to the 164-acre campus, two buildings, an amphitheater, a park, and several gardens that make up the Museum.
The Holly Springs Cultural Center will be showing Madagascar Saturday morning.
Big Sweep at the Parks
Join volunteers around the globe to help clean the world's waterways during this weekend's Big Sweep. Several area parks offer volunteering opportunities. The events are all free, but they do ask that you call to register so they have an idea of how many people will be helping.
Join an Occoneechee Mountain ranger for a Power Hike around Occoneechee State Natural Area Saturday afternoon.
