The Fun Starts Early

Thursday night's Science Cafe will feature Science Snapshots presented by Duke and NC State University doctoral students. As a special treat, the NC Museum of Natural Sciences will also host a Paleontology & Geology Open House. Go behind the scenes in the Paleontology & Geology Research Lab, get up close and personal with the bones of the world's newest megapredator-Siats meekerorum-on display for a short time and meet one of the most ancient crocodiles discovered during their extended Thursday hours.

You are invited to the annual Youth Art Show at Halle Cultural Arts Center Friday evening. Come see the amazing collection of artwork by kids ages 4 to 18.
 

Art in the Evening returns Friday night to the North Carolina Museum of Art with live music by Sidecar Social Club and the 2010 film, Chico and Rita. You can also join them for Friday Night Sound Bites that focus on how and why some artists emphasize the marks they make in a work.
 
Czech Matters Friday night at the Cary Arts Center. The Cary Town Band will feature Czech composers in this free concert.
 
History Comes Alive
 

The American Tobacco Trail has a rich and fascinating history that spans almost 200 years! Go back in time to learn about how the Trail went from rural farmland to railroad to trail with this fun History Hike Saturday.

Come and hear about the tensions that arise when an object of religious veneration is viewed as a representation of material culture. Dr. Louise McReynolds will present Objects Sacred and Profane: Icons and Iconography in modern culture at the North Carolina Museum of History Saturday.
 
Also Saturday at the NC Museum of History, you are invied to explore the lives and accomplishments of African American North Carolinians from the antebellum period to the Civil Rights on a guided African American History Tour.
 
Come to Historic Hillsborough for the Revolutionary War Living History Day Saturday. Events include military exercises from patriot militia and British army re-enactors, craft activities, and a sutler of period goods.
 
Paige Myers, a Textile Conservator from the North Carolina Museum of History, will talk about how to care for your heirloom textiles Tuesday night at the Page-Walker Arts & History Center.
 
Docent Steve Peck will explore Elizabeth Keckly's extraordinary journey from enslavement in Hillsborough through her time in the Lincoln White House as confidante and dressmaker of First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln on Wednesday evening at the Burwell School Historic Site.

Instead of looking into the past, Marbles Kids Museum will be helping kids take a peak into the future Saturday with a Future Me Fair.

How to Train Your Dragon will be the featured flick for Movies @ Your Library at the Holly Springs Cultural Center Saturday morning.
 
Celebrate the opening of OPQRS, Etc., a fable about color and self-expression through a special collaboration with Raleigh Little Theatre and the North Carolina Museum of Art Saturday. After enjoying a short scene from the play, families will join in on fun theater exercises and then head into the studio to make art.
 
The Natural Reads Book Club will be meeting at Harris Lake County Park Sunday afternoon and discuss the book, Ishmael by Daniel Quinn.
 
Sean O'Donnell will present a lecture entitled: A Moveable Feast: The Amazing Lives of Army Ants and the Birds that Follow Them Monday evening at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences.
 
Happenings in the Parks
 

Join NCSU Parks, Recreation and Tourism students and Harris Lake staff for a Cabin Fever Campfire Friday after dark. During the first hour, listen to stories and live music while you roast marshmallows over the campfire. As the sun goes down, the second hour will bring night hikes, games and more!

Join staff at Annie Louise Wilkerson Nature Preserve anytime between 11am-3pm Friday afternoon for a Nature Play Day.
 
Put on your best "sneaking feet" for a Nighttime Hike down to the lake Friday after dark as you learn what critters are active at night at Blue Jay Point County Park.
 
They are throwing a Star Party at Eno River State Park Friday after the sun goes down.
 
Meet with an Eno River State Park Volunteer Saturday to hike to the Guess Mill. There will be a brief talk about colonial Guess Road bridge crossing, the Holloway Mill residence and the Mill. They will also be doing Birdwatching and a Woodpecker Study at Eno Saturday morning.
 
Come and learn about Occoneechee Mountain's geologic wonders. Explore the pyrophyllite quarry with a real geologist on a Geology Hike Saturday afternoon,
 
Join Rangers at Prairie Ridge Ecostation Saturday for a fun and informative introduction to Tracking. You and your children are also invited to try out your observation skills while enjoying the outdoors with Nature Journaling for Children Monday.
 
Every Sunday afternoon, West Point on the Eno offers guided hikes. This weekend, the hike will go up and over Cox Mountain. The hike will travel along the river and past beautiful views and historic sites.
 
Ages 6-9 are invited to become Junior Entomologists for a day during Homeschool Days: Incredible Insects Monday at Historic Yates Mill County Park.
