This week kicks off the NC Science Festival just in time for Spring break. There are events throughout the state March 28th- April 13th. Here is some of the fun in the Triangle.

 
Join them for an exclusive open house of the new Water in Our World exhibit at Morehead Planetarium and Science Center Friday afternoon.
 
The NC State Vet School Open House on Saturday at the College of Veterinary Medicine next to the State Fairgrounds will include a Teddy Bear Suture Clinic, Anatomy lab, live animals, an opportunity to milk a cow, Open House Carnival for young children, tours and exhibits in the school, canine demonstrations and the Smithsonian Institution"s traveling exhibit "Animal Connections: Our Journey Together."
 
Saturday is Nano Days at the Museum of Life and Science. Come explore the miniscule world of atoms, molecules and nanoscale forces.
 
Celebrate the STEMOSPHERE Opening Celebration at Marbles Kids Museum Saturday with brain teasers, science challenges, and math play throughout the museum all day. Saturday is also the Family Science Fair at Marbles. Come back Sunday for NanoDays and check out hands-on activities and interactive demonstrations on all things teeny-tiny.
 
In addition to their Thursday evening Science Cafes, the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences invites you to Rational Comedy for an Irrational Planet with Brian Malow Tuesday night.
 
The NCSU Centennial Campus will host a Sci-Fi Film & Mythbusting Session: War of the Worlds Tuesday night. Learn from scientists and bust the myths behind the sci-fi classic War of the Worlds while you enjoy popcorn and soda.
 
Join them Tuesday or Friday afternoon for a Raleigh Rockin' Walkin' Tour where you will explore different rock types while visiting historic buildings, museums and other hidden nooks in the downtown area.
 
The Harris Energy and Environmental Center invites kids for a Wednesday morning of exploring energy and North Carolina's environment. Learn about how a nuclear plant works, electricity transmission, radiation, environmental monitoring and more through hands-on, interactive exhibits and instruction by Harris Nuclear Plant experts.
 
Fun Thursday & Friday
 
Marbles Kids Museum joins the downtown Raleigh movement to offer extended hours and special activities on Thursday nights. Twilight $2 Thursdays will run every Thursday from 3pm-7pm and starts this week. Grab some new or gently used kids books to donate to the WAKE Up and Read Children's Book Drive will be collecting through the end of March.
This week, the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences offers a Nature Explorer's Drop-Off Program for kids 3 to 11. Kids 12 and older are invited to learn about the skills necessary to pursue a career in science and the Science Café will explore Predicting the Unpredictable, all about predicting tornadoes.
 
Due to the popularity of Thursday night's Pizza and a Movie Night at the Halle Cultural Arts Center, they have added a Friday night program as well. Kick your weekend off with pizza and the movie Frozen!
 
Peter Lamb and the Wolves will be playing the tunes Friday night at the North Carolina Museum of Art along with a sound bite on Fashion.
 
Several parks have evening programs. Head over to Lake Crabtree County Park. Friday night to hear the Friday Night Frogs.
 
Spring has Sprung after dark at Crowder District Park Friday night. Go on a sensory hike around the pond and then make a toad abode for the spring peepers around your home!
 
Gather round a campfire while they read a Nature Story and Roast Marshmallows Friday night at Durant Nature Park.

Explore Spring at the Parks
 
Come and find out why Pollinators are so important and how they help put dinner on the table Friday afternoon at Eno River State Park. Come back to Eno Saturday for a Wildflower Hike and a Salamander Search. Come and learn the in's and out's of Composting Sunday. Kids 5-9 are invited to take a an Alphabet Inspired scavenger hunt and hike Wednesday on the Eno.
Bring the whole family to Blue Jay Point County Park Friday afternoon to Go on a Bear Hunt. Bring your favorite stuffed bear and enjoy part scavenger hunt, part adventure. Come back Saturday to celebrate the Year of the Salamander with a story, game and dipnetting for Newts.
 
Come on out to the new Apex Nature Park & Amphitheatre for a Grand Opening Celebration. There will be a ribbon cutting, BBQ and music by the Folsom Prison Gang
 
Rangers at Lake Crabtree County Park will also be looking for wildflowers as they distinguish between Wildflowers & Weeds Saturday morning. The Crabtree Casters will be out the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of each month for an informal fishing experience for the whole family.
 
Explore a guided hike of Springtime on the Millpond at Historic Yates Mill County Park Saturday morning. Celebrate Nature's April Fools on Tuesday with a hike exploring tricky plants and animals.
 
John Gerwin will demonstrate how and why we capture and mark birds during Saturday morning's Bird Banding Demonstration at Prairie Ridge Ecostation. Participants will even get a chance to release birds.
 
Join Raleigh Parks for a Big Sweep of Walnut Creek Saturday. Volunteers will be picking up litter to improve water quality & wildlife habitat while maintaining the beauty of the park.
 
As part of their year long Happy Birds Game, Umstead State Park will offer a Happy Birds Hike on Saturday.
 
The NCCU Jazz Combo celebrates the installation of Chancellor Derbra Saunders-White at the American Tobacco Amphitheater Tuesday for some Jazz at Lunch.
 
Enjoy Spring break over at the JC Raulston Arboretum Wednesday as you look for Signs of Spring.
 
Shape Up Downtown is back for the month of April on the City Plaza Astroturf. O2 Fitness will be offering free evening classes throughout the month. Click through for times.
 
More Weekend Fun
 
Come celebrate 40 WILD Years with the grand opening of "BUGS: An Epic Adventure" and the reopening of "kidZone"! Enjoy live music, dancing, puppet parades, educational activities and much more both Saturday and Sunday at the North Carolina Zoo.
Come learn about The Cruelty of War; Casualties and Medicine in the Civil War during this weekend's living history program at Bennett Place Historic Site.
 
Celebrate Lebanese culture with Cedars in the Pines on the Plaza, an outdoor festival of dances, foods, and crafts on Bicentennial Plaza. The day will feature several activities for children, even a scavenger hunt, and opportunities for photos.
 
Celebrate Spring Break at Marbles Kids Museum Monday March 31st through Sunday, April 6th with special activities for budding scientists, artists, innovators and more. Carolina Hurricanes staff members will be at the museum for Hockey Fun on Monday afternoon.
 
The First Wednesday Flick at the Halle Cultural Arts Center will be Gravity.
 
The Fairgrounds
 
The Tar Heel Gem & Mineral Club will sponsor a Precious Gem & Mineral Show all weekend at the State Fairgrounds.

 

The Hunt Horse Complex will be the site of an Hunter Jumper Horse Show Friday through Sunday.
 
The Fairgrounds will also host the Mid Atlantic Persian & Himalayan Fanciers CFA Cat Show on Saturday and the Vision Cat Club TICA Cat Show on Sunday.
