Happy Memorial Day Weekend! May your weekend be full of fun, relaxation and cookouts! Memorial Day Observations


Memorial Day is about remembering and honoring those who served our nation. There will be a wonderful event on Monday keeping the meaning of the Holiday in mind. The Tar Heel Detachment of the Marine Corps League for the greater Raleigh area, will sponsor a Memorial Day Ceremony at the State Capitol grounds.
 
On Saturday & Sunday, Bennett Place will also honor our fallen soldiers. They will host a living history event with re-enactors portraying American Soldiers through the Ages.
 
Join Marbles Kids Museum on Monday for a Stars, Stripes and Celebration! There will be Fizzy Fireworks Painting, a Rocket Science Lab and more spring into summer fun.
 
The Town of Garner will host a Memorial Day Observance at the Garner Veterans Memorial in Lake Benson Park on Monday.
 
Fun at the Parks
 
The Wake County Parks are offering some fun family programs this weekend! On Saturday you can go on a Bloom Hunt at Harris Lake, learn about Salamanders at Blue Jay Point or do some Spider Sniffing at Lake Crabtree.
 
Historic Yates Mill Pond County Park is offering you the opportunity to Paddle the Pond both Saturday and Sunday to explore the park's many features as seen only from the water. On Saturday, you can also join in on some Family Fishing Fun and try your luck at cane pole fishing.
 
Explore the Pyrophyllite Quarry with a real geologist on Saturday at Occoneechee Mountain State Natural Area.
 
Like to look under the logs and rocks? Join the rangers at Eno River State Park for a Decomposer Hunt on Saturday.
 
Sunday brings more fun and learning to the parks. Check out Turtle Power at Lake Crabtree and go on a Bat Hunt at Eno River.
 
The State Fairgrounds will host a Bird Fair and a Regional Morgan Horse Show this weekend.
 
Discovery Days returns to Pullen Park Tuesday with Paper Folding: Books & Crafts.
 
Are you looking to be a little more spontaneous? Pre-registration not really your thing? The Triangle has several beautiful lakes that offer boat rentals so you can enjoy the serenity of the water at your own pace. Bass Lake Park, Bond Park, Lake Benson, Lake Crabtree Park, Lake Johnson Park, Umstead State Park and Lake Wheeler all offer seasonal boat rental and they are all open for business this weekend!

This Thursday's Science Cafe at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences will be all about Electric Cars.
 
The "Find Your Cool" Summer Concert Series continues Thursday evening at CCB Plaza with the The Gravy Boys.
 
Southern Culture on the Skids will perform a Back Porch Music on the Lawn Concert Thursday evening at the American Tobacco Amphitheater.
 
Spend an Evening with Jean Shepherd Thursday evening and again Saturday at the Holly Springs Cultural Center. The Holly Springs Reader's Theater Troupe will present the staging of two short stories.
 
A little outside the Triangle, but well worth the drive, the Natural Science Center of Greensboro will be presenting the Laser Beatles Thursday evening with three shows on their OmniSphere Theater's 40-foot dome.
 
Art in the Evening kicks off the holiday weekend at the North Carolina Museum of Art with live music by David Dyer and the Crooked Smile Band and The Collecting Bug, a Friday Night Sound Bite explores the joys and vagaries of collecting and how collections can influence society.
 
Celebrate Yankovic Day in Cary Friday evening and keep the spirit of his polka music alive with the Polka Plus Band.
 
The Will McBride Group will be playing an outdoor concert at the Holly Springs Cultural Center Friday night. Also Friday night at the Cultural Center, join them for a reception for the artwork of artists Gen Bowman and Sheron Jamel. Bring the kids back Saturday morning for the movie All Dogs Go To Heaven.
 
This Friday's Movie by Moonlight at Regency Park will be the 2013 award winner, Gravity.
 
Friday night kicks off the PNC Downtown Raleigh Movie Series with the film Bull Durham and live music by the Nick Driver Band.
 
The Six Sundays in Spring Concert Series continues this weekend at Carroll Joyner Park with Thelonius, who will present an a cappella eclectic mix of modern musical styles.
 
This Wednesday's Hob Nob Jazz Series Concert at Regency Park will feature Marcus Anderson.

Holiday Weekend in Wilmington
 
If you are one of the lucky ones heading east to the coast, we wanted to let you know about some fun stuff going on this weekend in the Wilmington Area. The Battleship North Carolina will be hosting the Annual Memorial Day Observance. Remember those who gave their lives in service and honor veterans at a traditional Memorial Day Observance featuring a military guest speaker, an all-service Color Guard, a 21-gun salute by a Marine Corps Honor Guard, military band, Taps, and a memorial wreath cast onto the waters.
 
The fun starts Friday night in Downtown at Wilmington's Riverfront Park with concert opener Chasing Opal and headliner Satisfaction, a Rolling Stones Tribute band.
 
Wilmington's largest downtown arts festival returns this Memorial Day weekend. The Orange Street Arts Festival boasts the work of more than 55 artists, live entertainment and a food, beer, and wine tent.
 
Carolina Beach kicks off the season with a concert and Fireworks by the Sea. Local bands will be playing Friday night followed by a fabulous fireworks display. Sunday starts their movie season with Frozen.
 
Sunday nights through the summer, you can enjoy Sunday night Boogie in the Park Concerts.
 
While you are in the Wilmington area, you may want to check out the Fort Fisher Aquarium. Membership to the three North Carolina Aquariums and the North Carolina Zoo are reciprocal. Our favorite is Luna, the albino alligator.
