The Fun Starts Early

 

Thursday at the NC State Farmers Market is Apple Day. Come on out at lunch to try some free apple samples and apple dessert samples. Pick up some fall recipes and fresh NC apples while you are there.

Thursday evening, the NC Museum of Natural Sciences hosts a Science Cafe with Science Trivia and a presentation of The Story Behind Arms Races in Animals and Men.

The North Carolina Museum of History hosts a Bluegrass Jam Thursday evening. Bring your instrument and your love of bluegrass for a jam session.

Apex will sponsor a Skywarn Weather Spotter Training session Thursday evening.

Friday night, head over to City Market and enjoy a Centennial Celebration. There will be live bands, the Paper Hand Puppet Parade, street performers and buskers at this celebration! Triangle Brewing Company's City Market Centennial beer will also be on tap.

First Friday in downtown Raleigh features extended hours at Marbles Kids Museum and the Raleigh City Museum along with a Gallery Walk. This Friday Marbles also kicks off a month long Playdate with an Artist featuring Ellie Blake & Neill Prewitt.

Along with extended hours at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences and the Nature Research Center, First Friday treats visitors to live music, an opening reception for Mona Wu's show Nature My Muse, and the 1955 sci-fi film "Conquest of Space. "

The North Carolina Museum of Art hosts Art in the Evening every Friday with extended hours, music by the Ed Stephenson and the Paco Band and light fare. Browse the galleries, join a Friday Night Sound Bite on Curious Combinations and then stay for the 1941 classic film, The Maltese Falcon.

The Holly Springs Community Band will present concert on the Imagination in Flight Friday evening.

Cary's Seven O'clock Rock Series returns Friday night for Swing Night with The Gregg Gelb Swing Band. Come early for the free dance lesson.

Four time Grammy Award Winner David Holt & Josh Goforth will be performing Friday evening at the Apex Nature Park Amphitheatre as part of this weekend's World of Bluegrass Festival.

Live & Local Music & Art on the Plaza brings the Americana, rock and blues sounds of Eric Scholz to Dowtown Chapel Hill Friday night.

Want to enjoy a First Friday out in the crisp fall air? Crowder District Park invites you to come to Crowder By Night for Going Batty.

Bass Lake Park kicks off the weekend with Family Fun Night. First make arts & crafts, meet a live animal, or borrow a fishing pole! Then end the night with singer and storyteller Trish Miller or Dan the Magic Man.

Join members of the Raleigh Astronomy Club for a public Star Gaze Friday night at the Annie Louise Wilkerson Nature Preserve Park.

Fall Festivals

Heritage Day at Oak View County Park is everything an old time fair should be. Live entertainment, heritage crafts, re-enactors, hay rides, historic farm equipment, cane pole fishing, festival foods and lots of live animals! Come on out and cheer on the 4-H kids as they compete for ribbons. Stop by the ParkGeek booth. We will be doing some origami and sharing some of our fall harvest.
 
Bass Lake Day celebrates environmental education with interactive displays and exhibits about North Carolina's environment. Learn about soil types and water quality, touch pelts from a variety of our native critters and explore the wide diversity of aquatic life we enjoy. The evening will end with a concert.
 
Saturday also boasts Heritage Day at Jordan Lake State Recreation Area. The annual fall festival includes hands on activities, live entertainment, exhibits and live demonstrations.
 
The free Wide Open Bluegrass Street Festival has added an extra stage this year, so you can enjoy even MORE local, national, and international musicians this year! There will be 50+ bands, a dance tent, vendors, concessions, youth performances and activities in Downtown Raleigh starting Friday and running through Saturday.
 
In conjunction with the Bluegrass Festival, you can also enjoy the N.C. Whole Hog Barbecue State Championship in Raleigh this weekend.
 
In celebrating Hayti's legacy, the annual Phoenix Fest will again live up to its reputation as Durham"s funkiest street music festival on Saturday.
 
The Fox 50 Family Fest comes to the American Tobacco Campus Saturday with family-friendly events culminating with the Great American Tobacco Duck Race.
 
Its HOWL-O-Ween Saturday at the North Carolina Zoo. Meet the Keepers and learn about red wolf conservation.
 
With children's entertainment, a wide variety of food and refreshments and lots of great Irish musicians, Irish bands, and Irish dancers you won't want to miss Saturday's Irish Fall Music Festival in Moore Square.
 
Sunday brings the annual Festifall to Downtown Chapel Hill. One of North Carolina's longest running events, there will be over 100 area and regional artists showcased along with a wide variety of live music, poetry and hands on art opportunities.
 
Durham is also going to the dogs Sunday for Woofstock. The event at Southern Boundaries Park will feature canine demonstrations, games, contests, live music, adoption opportunities, a pet market and a Kid's Zone.
 
Music, History & Culture
 
The North Carolina Museum of Art will offer a free screening of the documentary film Out of the Shadows Saturday afternoon. The film explores how with powerful x-ray technology, art historians and scientists have discovered paintings beneath the surface of the NCMA's The Armorer's Shop by Breughel and Teniers.
The Art Museum will also offer Meet Your Museum Tours on Saturday to introduce you to the 164-acre campus, two buildings, an amphitheater, a park, and several gardens.
 
The Triangle Brass Band will be performing a Pops in the Park concert Sunday afternoon at Bond Park.
 
The Holly Springs Cultural Center will be showing the movie Turbo Saturday morning and Tarzan on Monday.
 
Big Sweep

Join volunteers around the globe to help clean the world's waterways during this weekend's Big Sweep. Several area parks offer volunteering opportunities. The events are all free, but they do ask that you call to register so they have an idea of how many people will be helping.

Lake Crabtree County Park will host a Big Sweep event Saturday morning along with a guided hike with bird enthusiast, Vernon.
 
Join ranks to help clean up the Falls Lake shoreline around Blue Jay Point County Park during Big Sweep.
 
The Big Sweep will also take place at Durant Nature Park on Saturday.
The Carroll Howard Johnson Environmental Education Park will also host a Big Sweep clean up Saturday.
 
Even Raven Rock State Park will be cleaning up for Big Sweep this Saturday.
 
Harris Lake County Park will push their Big Sweep efforts back to Sunday afternoon along with Historic Yates Mill County Park.
 
Along with Big Sweep, Yates Mill will also offer Saturday Mill Tours, Sunday Mill Tours and a Family Friendly Natural Explorations Hike: Leave the Wetlands to Beavers on Sunday afternoon.
