Welcome to all the new ParkGeeks we met at Historic Oak View Park's Heritage Days. It was a great festival and the weather was incredible.

The Band Smile will be playing a Follow Me 2 Fuquay-Varina Concert Thursday evening in Centennial Square.
 
Thursday culminates Power Week in Wake Forest with an Energy Fair. With both a daytime and evening edition, the Wake Forest Town Hall will be the scene of an energy savings and electric safety expo. The Wake Forest Power linemen will also offer electric safety demonstrations in Centennial Plaza. In the spirit of customer appreciation, Wake Forest Power will also be offering free hot dogs and soda.
 
This week's Science Thursday at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences will explore How to Make an IMAX® Film in Your Basement.
 
Head over to the Raleigh State Farmers Market Thursday at lunchtime for the Great Pumpkin Contest. Pick up recipes, pick out your pumpkin, view the decorated pumpkins and gawk at the Giant pumpkins competing for the Largest Pumpkin Contest.
 
Enjoy light refreshments, bust some history myths, and explore their legendary resources during Thursday afternoon's Fall Open House for Teachers at the North Carolina Museum of History.
 
Its another Twilight $2 Thursday at Marbles. Admission is only $2 from 3pm-7pm and they stay open late every Thursday at Marbles Kids Museum.
 
Halloween is Around the Corner
 

With only a few weeks until Halloween, there are plenty of spooky activities to get your little ghouls and goblins in the mood. With fun seasonal activities for little ones, family centered events and truly spooky haunted houses for the older crowd, there is most certainly something for everyone these next few weeks. Many of the following events do have admission fees or require reservations so click through for all the details. There will be even more Halloween activities the next two weekends, so if you are trying to plan ahead, just go to the Events search at www.ParkGeek.com, put in the dates and start planning!

 

Head on over to Blue Jay Point County Park Saturday afternoon for Batty, Batty, Batty 1-2-3. The Family Wildlife Series will explore the exciting things local bats do and include a Night Creature Luminary craft to take home.
 
Sunday kicks off Wolf Awareness Week at the Museum of Life & Science. Come learn about the very rare red wolf, native to North Carolina, of which there are only 300 alive in the world, with 190 in captivity.
 
Come out to Bass Lake Park Saturday evening for a Halloween Spook-Tacular and enjoy a spooky time with all kinds of amazing interactive exhibits. There will also be a costume contest and haunted trail!
 
Marbles Kids Museum will be Pumpkin Carving with WakeMed Pediatric Surgeons Saturday afternoon.
 
Fall Color is Coming

While October is a sensational time of year to just get in the car head over to a state or county park and go for a hike, there are some great guided hikes and special programs going on at the parks to make your Fall weekend that much more enjoyable!

Join an Umstead State Park Ranger for a 4 Mile Run on trails and dirt roads on this challenging and educational adventure Thursday evening. Come back Saturday for a Big Year Birdwalk with the Wake Audubon Society.

See the Sunset from the picturesque overlook at Occoneechee Mountain Friday evening on a guided Sunset Hike. Come back Wednesday afternoon to take a History Hike and learn about the history of Hillsborough.
 
The Annual Chili Cook Off will take place at Saturday's Farmers' Market in Downtown Holly Springs. Come cast your vote for the amatuer and professional categories while you enjoy live music and fun for the entire family.
 
Enjoy shopping for Arts & Crafts, nostalgic hayrides, tasty food options, kids activities (bowling, pony rides, face painting & more), the local farmers market. and five local bands performing during Autumn Fest in Downtown Mebane Saturday.
 
The Town of Hillsborough will host a Riverwalk Opening Celebration. This exciting event will be the formal grand opening of Riverwalk and events are planned throughout the day. including a tree planting, puppet making, bike decorating, live music and a scavenger hunt.
 
The City of Durham will officially open Leigh Farm Park Saturday. The Piedmont Wildlife Center will host wildlife ambassador programs, nature stories, and music in the newly renovated amphitheater.
 
Jordan Lake will host kids for their Catch a Sure Thing (C.A.S.T.) program both Saturday and Sunday mornings. Bring your kids 6-12 for an introduction to fishing. Come on out Sunday morning to help them take a Bald Eagle Count.
 
Join one of the North Carolina Museum of History's garden staff Saturday afternoon for a Saturdays in the Garden tour in Bicentennial Plaza and see what's going on this time of year in the garden!
 
You'll learn to Bird by ear and sight as you enjoy a leisurely walk through Durant Nature Park Saturday morning.
 
Observe the fall changes at Holden Mill on a Morning Hike at Eno River State Park early Saturday. Saturday afternoon, meet them at the Historic Piper Cox House to make some nature inspired Crafts on the Porch or catch some Water Bugs. On Sunday, learn how Geology Rocks or take a Fall Colors Canoe Trip.
 
Enjoy the crisp fall air while you help beautify Morrisville during their Fall Litter Sweep Saturday morning.
 
Peek into the water as you explore the critters that are swimming underneath the surface of the pond during Sunday's Family Pond Study all about Dancing Dragonflies.
 
Music & Movies
 

Friday night features a variety of programs at the North Carolina Museum of Art. Art in the Evening brings extended hours and Brazilian Jazz music with Onda. The Gallery Tour will focus on Texture and the evening movie will be the 1950 classic Gun Crazy.

 

Traditional Dance Caller, Connie Carringer will teach fun dances for the whole family: Squares, Circles, Appalachian, and more with help from an old-time string band Friday night at the Halle Cultural Arts Center's Family Dance.
 
The Red Vibes, Raleigh's hottest acoustic duo, will be playing a Downtown Performers Series Concert Friday night in Cary.
 
Live & Local Music & Art on the Plaza returns Friday night to Downtown Chapel Hill with live art by Dan Nelson, Create Your Own Watercolor and the 2nd Friday Artwalk.
 
It's the second Friday of the month so it's time for Art After Hours in Downtown Wake Forest and Art After Dark in Downtown Fuquay-Varina.
 
The Starring North Carolina! Film Series returns to the North Carolina Museum of History Friday night with the film Maximum Overdrive. Sunday, the Museum hosts a Music of the Carolinas concert featuring the old-time banjo music of Sara Grey & Kieron Means.
 
Come on out to Bass Lake Park Friday night for some Family Bingo.
 
The Holly Springs Cultural Center will feature Little Mermaid for their Saturday morning family movie. Bring the kids back Monday morning for An Extrodinary Goofy Movie.
 
Come downtown to enjoy the Downtown Raleigh Food Truck Rodeo on Sunday. Over 50 trucks have committed from across the State of NC. There will be tables and chairs along the way for on-street seating for over 1,000 people. There is a new bubble zone and street chalk art zone for the families.
 
Sertoma Amphitheatre will feature a Brass at Bond concert Sunday afternoon.
 
Events at the Museums
 

Saturday is the Grand Opening of the new special exhibit at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. The World's Largest Dinosaurs draws on cutting-edge paleo-biological research and takes visitors beyond the bones and into the bodies of these titans, shedding light on how heart rate, respiration, metabolism and reproduction are linked to size. Saturday's Grand Opening Event will also feature free activities throughout the museum.

 

The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences will host the 2nd annual STEM Career Showcase for Students with Disabilities on Wednesday morning. Students with developmental and/or physical disabilities, grades 3-12, will have the opportunity to interact with college students and professionals with a variety of disabilities who have forged successful career paths in STEM fields.
 
The fourth annual Historic Church Walk is an invitation to view the beautiful, architecturally-significant interiors of Raleigh's eight historic churches, all within walking distance of the State Capitol Saturday morning.
 
Hear some North Carolina pottery history, and craft a little clay "face" of your own during Saturday's Make it, Take it program Face Jugs at the North Carolina Museum of History.
 
The WPTF Weekend Gardener Show with Mike Raley and Anne Clapp will be broadcasting live from the Raleigh State Farmers Market Saturday morning.
 
Historic Yates Mill Pond County Park will offer Saturday at the Old Mill Tours and Mill Heritage & Local History Tours on Sunday.
 
The Burwell School Historic Site hosts Redge Hanes, also known as E.C. Hanes, as he presents his book Billy Bowater Wednesday evening.
