This weekend is all about Art and Valentines Day. You can Paint Your heART Out at Sertoma Arts Center, enter the Dinosaur Illustration Contest for Kids at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences and check out the Community Arts Festival running through Saturday at the Holly Springs Cultural Center.

First Friday Fun

The Holly Springs Community Arts Festival continues through Saturday. The event showcases local artists, writers, performers, instructors, artisan exhibitors and vendors. Enjoy a date night out at a concert by Mystique Friday night and a Gala Fundraising Evening & Art Raffle, featuring a performance by Scott Ainslie on Saturday night.

 

Art in the Evening kicks off the weekend Friday night at the North Carolina Museum of Art with live music by Ed Stephenson and the Paco Band. The Friday Night Sound Bite will explore It Bears Repeating and the featured flick is the 1954 French film, French Cancan.

First Friday is back in Downtown Raleigh with their monthly Gallery Walk, extended hours at the Raleigh City Museum and Marbles Kids Museum.

First Friday Movie Night at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences includes a whole evening of fun events. Extended hours allow you to roam the exhibits after dark along with live music by Ape Man, an opening reception for artist Stacey Thalden, snacks and beverages from the Daily Planet Café, a Teen Science Cafe about "African Lions: Good Fences Make Good Neighbors" and the 1971 movie "Escape from the Planet of the Apes".

There will be a whole evening of Family Fun out at Bass Lake Park Friday night. Make arts and crafts, meet a live animal, or borrow a fishing pole for the first hour then enjoy a magic show with Dan the Magic Man or a concert by Trish Miller.

Art, Culture & History

LEGO-palooza is back this weekend to the Morehead Planetarium and Science Center. The North Carolina LEGO Users Group creates amazing displays of unique LEGO scenes, from settlements in outer space to hometowns throughout America for you to enjoy!

 

The Annual Durham Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Parade Durham Central Park takes place Saturday featuring floats, marching bands, steppers, horses, motorcycles, school groups and more.

Mordecai Historic Park will host Historic Hearth Cooking & Weaving Demonstrations Saturday. Come enjoy free demonstrations all day on the property.

Families are invited to watch actors from Raleigh Little Theatre perform a short scene from the play The Velveteen Rabbit. Then head into the studio to create imaginative animal sculptures from paper and assorted tape Saturday at the North Carolina Museum of Art. Grown ups are invited to join the NCMA Book Club which will be discussing Nathaniel's Nutmeg on Saturday. The Museum of Art will also be giving Meet Your Museum Tours all weekend so you can get acquainted with the 164 acre campus.

Lions, Tigers and Bearcats, Oh My is the title of this weekend's Science Saturday at the NC Museum of Sciences. Learn what it takes to care for the wild animals at the Conservators Center with help from Tut, the Fennec Fox.

On the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of every month, stop by the Halle Cultural Arts Center and sample activities for the upcoming art camps. Drop by to do arts and crafts, games and more during this free morning event.

Join a Blue Jay Point Ranger to learn how to transform empty mylar-lined coffee bags into an attractive and useful Nature Arts- Coffee Bag Tote. Saturday's program is free for teens and adults.

The Heart For A Heart Valentines Vendor Show at the NC State Fairgrounds will give you a chance to buy a last minute valentines gift for that special person.

Shot in Greenville in 1947 using a local cast of African American musicians and actors, Pitch a Boogie Woogie was thought to be lost until the 1970s, when a copy was found and restored. Come see the film and listen to a discussion on its importance and legacy Saturday at the North Carolina Museum of History.

Scott Ainslie will be presenting a Music of the Carolinas Concert Sunday afternoon at the North Carolina Museum of History.

Kung Fu Panda 2 will be the Monday Morning Movie at the Holly Springs Cultural Center.

More to do at the Parks

Take a History Hike Thursday afternoon at Eno River State Park or come out to the park early Friday morning for a Bird Walk. They will be celebrating Groundhog Day Saturday with a special program.

 

Kids are invited to chase away the winter blues with a hike through the JC Raulston Arboretum's Winter Garden Friday morning. After the walk, warm up inside with a good book and a fun winter craft.

Join Lake Crabtree's bird enthusiast Saturday mornig and go Birding with Vernon.

Join a Jordan Lake ranger on a nice leisurely walk on Ebenezer's Church Trail Saturday while you discuss the lake's history and other interesting facts about the area.

Its another Citizen Science Saturday at Prairie Ridge Ecostation for Wildlife Learning. These Saturday morning adventures will introduce you to a citizen science project and enlist your help collecting and entering data as you enjoy a walk around the grounds with one of their naturalists.

Explore the monadnock, AKA "leftover mountain" that we call Occoneechee Mountain as you hike to the summit Saturday morning.

The Great Backyard Bird Count is February 13-16. Come to Raven Rock State Park's Visitor Center Saturday afternoon to find out how to participate in this fun event and learn to identify birds by sight and sound.

Kids are invited to come out to Falls Lake State Recreation Area Sunday for a Nature in Winter Scavenger Hunt and Hike.
