Labor Day Weekend is only a week away. The summer events are winding down and our fabulous fall festival season will soon be in full swing!

Kick off the Weekend!

This Thursday's Science Cafe at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences will focus on the Science Behind Rabies along with extended hours.

Thursday's Pickin' in the Plaza will feature the music of Kelly Dansby & Lodge McCammon to start, followed by Christiane Smedley. The evening will end with a concert by New Reveille. There will also be an assortment of food trucks and local beers.

The 2013 reboot Star Trek will be shown on the outdoor screen in Downtown Chapel Hill Thursday night as the last movie of the season.

Back Porch Music on the Lawn presents American Aquarium Thursday evening at the American Tobacco Campus Amphitheatre.

Friday is NC Seafood Day during lunch at the State Farmers Market in Raleigh, Come try samples, get recipes and buy some of fresh NC Seafood.

The fun continues Friday night at the NC Museum of Art. Peter Lamb and the Wolves will be playing the tunes for Art in the Evening and the Sound Bite will explore Luxurious Layers. Friday night after dark, stay to see the 2014 film Boyhood.

Head on over to Downtown Historic Hillsborough for a Last Friday Art Walk.

Starlight Concert favorite Jamrock returns to the Page-Walker Arts & History Center Friday to fill the air with their authentic reggae rhythms.

One of the south's great party bands, North Tower, will be playing a family-friendly concert outside the Holly Springs Cultural Center Friday night.

Festivals and More Movies and Music

Bentonville Battlefield State Historic Site invites you to step back in time Saturday during their living history event. There will be Period-costumed living historians demonstrating camp life as well as musket and artillery demonstrations.

The Holly Springs Cultural Center invites you to bring your kids to see Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole Saturday morning or Alvin and the Chipmunks Monday morning.

Join the North Carolina Museum of History's garden staff for an informal tour of the History of the Harvest exhibit along Bicentennial Plaza Saturday afternoon. Come back to the Museum Sunday for a screening of the 2014 documentary, The Last Barn Dance, which follows a dairy farmer's efforts to save his lifestyle. There will also be a Q&A after the movie and a reception with local musicians David Kleiss and Shawn Chase. The youth band, Fiddlestix will perform before the screening.

After the sun goes down Saturday, they will be showing the movie Paddington at the Apex Nature Park.

It's a Small World Celebration Sunday at Regency Park! Cary's Booth Amphitheatre and Kindervillage are partnering up for one colossal family style party! The event will feature performances from area cultural groups representing countries all over the world, an instrument petting zoo, craft stations and face painting.

Come learn about the History of William B. Umstead State Park as they present a documentary telling the story at the park Sunday morning.

Guest dancers from Raleigh Dance Theater will be at Marbles Kids Museum Sunday to teach families some dance moves during Storybook Tales.

Join the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. Monday evening for a look at California's Monterey Bay and watch one of nature's great "reality" shows, featuring humpback whales, blue whales, sea lions, dolphins, elephant seals, sea otters, great white sharks, shearwaters and brown pelicans. Big Blue Live is a new production from PBS and the BBC. There will be a Q&A after the show,

Chicken Run will be the featured flick Tuesday morning at the Halle Cultural Arts Center. As part of their Academy Award Film Series, they will be showing 5 Flights Up Wednesday evening.

Wednesday evening kicks off the Pickin' In the Pines Concert Series at Regency Park. Enjoy concerts every Wednesday in September along with a wide variety of food and beverages to include Brews from Sweetwater Brewing Company. This week's concert will feature a Patsy Cline Tribute by the Johnny Folsom 4 with Canady Thomas.

More Weekend Fun at the Parks

Two Wake County Parks have fun, family programs for after the sun goes down Friday, The American Tobacco Trail is hosting a Night Hike to look for beavers and Crowder Park will be having some S'mores Summer Fun during an evening campfire.

Jordan Lake is hosting their first Casting for Kids Fishing Tournament Saturday morning. Kids ages 6-12 are invited to an event all about the local aquatic environment, fishing techniques, safety, and enjoying being outside.

Learn about Resident Birds or those birds that don't migrate Saturday morning at Umstead State Park.

Historic Yates Mill Pond County Park will be offering Saturday at the Old Mill Tours and Mill Heritage & Local History Tours on Sunday.

Come on a Full Moon Paddle at lake Crabtree Saturday night and paddle the lake by moonlight.

They will also be celebrating the full moon at Eno River State Park Saturday after sunset. Join a Park Ranger at Few's Ford to look at the Moon with a telescope.

End the weekend at Harris Lake County Park Sunday evening with an Evening Paddle and Marshmallow Toast to celebrate National Toasted Marshmallow Day.

Lots to do at the Fairgrounds

There is quite an eclectic mix again this weekend at the State Fairgrounds. The North Carolina RV Dealers Association is hosting their Fall RV Show & Sale. This event does have an admission fee, but you can get coupons at their website.

The Original Coin & Currency Show will bring a variety of numismatic items including rare coins, precious metals, paper money, tokens, coin collecting books and supplies to the Holshouser Building Saturday and Sunday.

The Hunt Horse Complex will be hosting the Labor of Love Horse Show on Saturday and Sunday. There will be all levels of dressage competition.
