Happy Memorial Day Weekend! May your weekend be full of fun, relaxation and cookouts! The biggest and most exciting event in the Triangle this weekend is the Freedom Balloon Fest. Starting Friday and running through Monday, the 2nd annual balloon festival has moved locations to Fleming Loop Park in Fuquay-Varina. There will be balloon ascensions, tethered rides, eveing balloon glows, a fun zone, food trucks, live music and a Merchant, Arts & Crafts Vendor Village. Memorial Day Observations

The Carolina Veterans Support Group is holding an event at Cary's Veterans Memorial on Memorial Day. You can also sponsor a flag for the Field of Flags.

On Saturday and Sunday, Bennett Place will honor the sacrifice and share the history of the Confederate soldiers at Bennett Place. They will host a living history event with re-enactors portraying American Soldiers through the Ages.

The Town of Garner will host a Memorial Day Observance at the Garner Veterans Memorial in Lake Benson Park on Monday.

Holly Springs will host a Memorial Day Celebration of Life on Monday at the DG War on Terrorism Memorial in Veterans Park.

Marbles Kids Museum will host a Summer Blast Off Saturday through Monday to celebrate a weekend of big fun!

Blue Jay Point County Park invites the family to One Small Pond Monday, a program on the producers, consumers and decomposers that keep the food chain going in their tiny pond.

Fun at the Parks

Historic Yates Mill Pond County Park invites you to join them for High Flying Kites Friday afternoon. Paddle the Pond to explore the park's many features as seen only from the water Saturday. On Saturday, you can also take an Old Mill Tour and on Sunday they are offering Mill Heritage & Local History Tours.

See what critters work the Night Shift Friday after dark at Durant Nature Park.

Blue Jay Point County Park is hosting a Bluebird Bonanza for the whole family Saturday. Enjoy some activities and a short walk along the Bluebird Trail.

They will be exploring Animal Tracks Saturday at Falls Lake State Recreation Area.

Join them for some Citizen Science Saturday at Prairie Ridge Ecostation.

The State Fairgrounds will host a Bird Fair and a Regional Morgan Horse Show this weekend.

Are you looking to be a little more spontaneous? Pre-registration not really your thing? The Triangle has several beautiful lakes that offer boat rentals so you can enjoy the serenity of the water at your own pace. Bass Lake Park, Bond Park, Lake Benson, Lake Crabtree Park, Lake Johnson Park, Umstead State Park and Lake Wheeler all offer seasonal boat rental and they are all open for business this weekend!

Music, Movies & Museums

This Thursday's Science Cafe at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences will be about Shining Evolutionary Light on Human Sleep and Health.

The Live and Local Music & Arts Series will feature Foot- Stompin, Fist Raisin Kasey Tyndall on Thursday night in Downtown Chapel Hill.

After Hours Early Summer is a weekly event in Downtown Carrboro at the Weaver Street Market. Bring a picnic or chairs every Thursday evening May through June for a free concert.

Art in the Evening kicks off the holiday weekend at the North Carolina Museum of Art with live music by Peter Lamb and the Wolves and a Friday Night Sound Bite exploring Reading the Scene.

Join the Final Friday Cary Art Loop with extended hours at art galleries, restaurants, coffee houses, and other businesses that showcase visual arts, music, and more. There is even free C-Tran shuttle service between downtown venues.

Runyon's Funyon Band will kick off the Summer at the Springs Series at the Holly Springs Cultural Center Friday night.

Last Friday Art Walk livens up Downtown Hillsborough with extended hours at local galleries, workshops for children, food vendors, sidewalk art exhibits and a concert on the Old Courthouse Lawn by the Big Time Band.

Lake Benson Park will host an Outdoor Movie Night & Family Camp Out. Come see the movie "The Peanuts Movie" under the stars and if you wish, stay and camp out.

The PNC Downtown Raleigh Movie Series kicks off this Friday with the classic film Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Enjoy an outdoor performance of the Two Gentlemen of Verona, Shakespeare's fast-paced romp through love, friendship, and betrayal in the North Carolina Museum of History's Fletcher Garden. There will be performances Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

The Six Sundays in Spring Concert Series continues this weekend at Carroll Joyner Park with JamRock.

This Wednesday's Hob Nob Jazz Series Concert at Regency Park will feature Yolanda Rabun.

Holiday Weekend in Wilmington

If you are one of the lucky ones heading east to the coast, we wanted to let you know about some fun stuff going on this weekend in the Wilmington Area. The Battleship North Carolina will be hosting the Annual Memorial Day Observance. Remember those who gave their lives in service and honor veterans at a traditional Memorial Day Observance featuring a military guest speaker, an all-service Color Guard, a 21-gun salute by a Marine Corps Honor Guard, military band, Taps, and a memorial wreath cast onto the waters.

Wilmington's largest downtown arts festival returns this Memorial Day weekend. The Orange Street Arts Festival boasts the work of more than 60 artists, live entertainment and a food, beer, and wine tent.

Carolina Beach kicks off the season with a concert and Fireworks by the Sea. Local bands will be playing Friday night followed by a fabulous fireworks display. Sunday starts their movie season with Minions.

While you are in the Wilmington area, you may want to check out the Fort Fisher Aquarium. Membership to the three North Carolina Aquariums and the North Carolina Zoo are reciprocal. Our favorite is Luna, the albino alligator.
