It looks like it is going to be a fabulous weekend! Along with the cooler temperatures, this weekend is a transition between the summer movies and concerts and the fall festivals and harvest celebrations.
Pines & Power Plants
Bring the whole family out to Harris Lake County Park for two fun events. The annual Longleaf Festival will feature hay-wagon rides, games, crafts, live animals, guided nature hikes and even a chance to cool off with their water pumper. The live entertainment will include the Traveling Teacher Show and Mara Shea on the fiddle. ParkGeek will be there, so come on out visit with us and have a fun afternoon while you learn about the important place the longleaf pine holds in our local ecosystem.
Just down the road from Harris Lake County Park is the Harris Energy & Environmental Center at the Nuclear Power Plant. Join them for Harris Community Day, a rare opportunity to get sneak peak at how the power plant works. You will have the opportunity to tour the control room simulator, an exact replica of the plant's control room, and learn about plant operations, energy efficiency and emergency preparedness.
Festivals& Fun
The annual Lazy Days Arts & Crafts Festival is back this weekend in downtown Cary. Along with an amazing array of artists and crafters displaying their wares, the festival boasts lots of great festival food, non-stop, live entertainment and a festival within a festival, Kids World. Highlighting this years festival will be an attempt to create the world's largest doll, a 50 ft tall Lazy Daze Man named Cary and The Great Steak Challenge, one of 10 regional finals hosted by Beringer Vineyards. Child Evangelism Fellowship of Greater Raleigh Area and several area sponsors are hosting the Annual Children's Good News Spectacular. The free event at the NC State Fairgrounds will feature inflatible games and rides, popcorn, snow cones & drinks, and an illusion show blended with several gospel presentations.
Also at the Fairgrounds this weekend, there will be an Arabian Horse Show and a Hunter Jumper Horse Show.
Movies & Music in the Triangle
Pack a picnic dinner and bring the whole family over to the Burwell School Historic Site for a Last Friday Celebration. At dusk they will be showing the feature film, Disney PIXAR's, "Up" along with free popcorn and punch. Make sure you go before the movie to enjoy lots of fun games for you and your family to play organized by AWANA members.
The Natural Science Center of Greensboro is melding Pop music and a laser show together this weekend for an entertaining presentation of Laser Pop.
The Classic Soul and Blues sounds of the Lockdown Blues Band will be filling the night air over at the Holly Springs Cultural Center Friday night.
Saturday morning at the Holly Springs Cultural Center, treat your kids to the movie, The Incredibles.
As a continuation of their Family Fit Series, Marbles Kids Museum invites you to join the Cary YMCA Super Skippers as they skip their stuff and share their skills and talents with you.
As a great finale to the weekend, Laughing Through Your Fingers will be Performing favorite rock hits Sunday evening out at Fletcher Park.
Enjoy the Outdoors
Historic Yates Mill Pond County Park will be giving Mill Heritage Tours this weekend. After getting some background on the Mill's business and social history, you get to explore the first floor of the fully restored mill.
Costumed living historians from the 27th NC Troops will conduct weapons demonstrations and hold discussions on the lives of the average Civil War soldier during a Summer Seasonal Living History Program at Historic Bentonville Battlefield.
Historic Preservation Society of Durham volunteers will lead an Architecture & the Urban Landscape Walking Tour through downtown Durham highlighting the many architectural styles popular in the 20th century.
Did you know there are more than 30 different snake species in North Carolina? Meet the Reptiles of Lake Crabtree will give you the opportunity to meet some of these and other reptiles native to Lake Crabtree County Park.
The State Parks will be offering a wide variety of programs this weekend. Jordan Lake State Recreation Area invites you to attend a presentation about Hurricanes and Severe Weather by staff from the National Weather Service. Eno River State wants you to help them identify Crawling Insects and Arachnids or prepare to get wet as you look for Waterbugs. In keeping with the bug theme, Come on out to Occoneechee Mountainand see what Dragonflies can be found on this easy hike around the ponds. Join a Park Ranger at Umstead State Park to learn Basic Land Navigation.
