The big activity this weekend is the NC State Fair. You have until next Sunday to take it all in. We have ticket information and special days so click through before you go.
Halloween is Around the Corner
With two weeks until Halloween, there are plenty of spooky activities to get your little ghouls and goblins in the mood. With fun seasonal activities for little ones, family centered events and truly spooky haunted houses for the older crowd, there is most certainly something for everyone these next two weeks. Many of the following events do have admission fees or require reservations so click through for all the details. There will be even more Halloween activities next weekend, so if you are trying to plan ahead, just go to the "Events" search at www.ParkGeek. com, put in the dates and start planning!
Haunting at Harris out at Harris Lake County Park is a fun annual family event. The afternoon will feature fun games, pumpkin carving and a hayride to the land of Sherwood Forest where Robin Hood and his Merry Men await. The fun continues Wednesday morning at Harris Lake with An Array of Arachnids.
Along with bats and black cats, wolves are another great Halloween animal. Head over to the NC Zoo for HOWL-O-Ween to learn the howls and tales of the Red Wolves.
Whether you are a competitor or just looking for a healthy activity, you may want to head over to the Morrisville Aquatics & Fitness Center for the annual Great Pumpkin Road Race. Click through for all the details, but there will be lots of options from a 5K race to a 1 mile fun run.
Bring the entire family and enjoy hayrides, inflatable rides, games, children's activities, main stage entertainment, food vendors and more for Hay Day at Laurel Hills Park.
Fall Color is Here
While October is a sensational time of year to just get in the car head over to a state or county park and go for a hike, there are some great guided hikes and special programs going on at the parks to make your Fall weekend that much more enjoyable!
Bring the kids over to Kids Together Park for their annual Fall Foliage Walk. After a guided tour of the trees, shrubs and flowers that adorn the park, there will be a fun art activity using plant materials collected during the tour.
Fall Harvests will be the theme of this month's Family Wildlife Series at Blue Jay Point County Park. Start with a forest hike and finish up carving a pumpkin to take home.
Experience the beauty of Nature Art. See and explore the colors, shapes, and patterns that make the natural world so beautiful at West Point on the Eno. Come back to the park after dark for a Night Hike. Sunday, you can take a hike while you learn about the Seeds of Life or take a Fall Color Walk.
Have you noticed the geese in the sky yet? Come out to Anderson Point Park and get a look at some Migrating Fall Warblers as well as other migratory species.
See mushrooms, spiders and other nature preparing for winter during a Fall Hike at Crowder District County Park.
Eno River State Park invites you to join them for Campfire, S'mores & More. They will provide the s'mores and you can bring the stories to share for a wonderful fall evening. Spring Back, Fall Ahead will be a Naturalist-led hike through the park to look for signs of the changing season.
Poetry, Music & Movies
Carrboro will host the West End Poetry Festival this weekend with something for the whole family including a youth poetry workshop.
The Cary Diwali Celebration is back this weekend at Regency Park celebrating Indian culture with vibrant performances by local artists, unique exhibits on various aspects of India and colorful decorations along with delicious food.
The Annual Hillsborough Handmade Parade is a walking theatrical performance, a spectacle of art, creativity, and public theatre. The Handmade Parade is a Mardi Gras style parade with giant puppets, stilt-walkers, Brazilian Samba and Marching Bands that will parade through historic downtown Hillsborough.
Make plans to attend the first annual Raleigh Parks and Recreation Digital Photography Contest and Workshops.
The Holly Springs Cultural Center will feature How to Train Your Dragon for their Saturday morning family movie.
The Family Fun Sunday & Lollipop Series at the Carrboro Century Center will feature Cathy Kielar and her puppets with an afternoon packed with singing, drumming and laughing for all!
Celebrate Jazz Appreciation Month with a concert by the Triangle Youth Jazz Ensemble at the Sertoma Amphitheater.
Celebrate Funday Sunday Downtown with family activities and music in Downtown Wake Forest on October and November Sundays.
CatBaby will be grooving for a Sunday evening concert at Durham Central Park.
Events at the Museums
The Museum of Life and Science gears up for a week of special activities honoring Wolf Awareness Week. The highlight will be a special screening on Sunday of the movie Lords of Nature: Life in a Land of Great Predators.
Also at the Museum of Life & Science, you can see the cars of the future and check out the winners of the Progressive X-Prize competition. These X-Prize Cars will amaze you with their lightweight, futuristic designs and ability to travel over 100 miles on one gallon of gas.
Make a miniature version of a 19th-century chair and then see full-size examples at a Make it-Take it program at the North Carolina Museum of History.
Tuesday night brings Target $2 Tuesday Night. The monthly event lets you enjoy extended hours for just $2 per person.
The Historic Preservation Society of Durham docents will lead a Civil Rights Legacy Walking Tour focusing on sites in downtown Durham that were important in the 1950s and "60s Civil Rights movement.
