Art, Music & History this weekend

Twilight $2 Thursdays lets you have fun at Marbles Kids Museum after hours every Thursday for only $2 admission! While you are there, bring new or gently used children"s books to donate to their WAKE Up and Read Book Drive. Come back to Marbles Saturday though Wednesday for Happy Hearts, Cupid-inspired activities.

The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences hosts a a Science Cafe every Thursday night. This week they will be discussing how Are Small Things the Next Asbestos?. Adults are invited back to the Museum Friday night for Mardi Gras. Discover the biodiversity of the bayou, taste Cajun cuisine, fish for "gators, and toast with hurricanes, featuring live music by Peter Lamb and the Wolves.

Friday night at the NC Museum of Art makes a great date night with Iris after Dark. After you enjoy the music, small plates and special drinks; stay for the film, Stand-In.

You won't want to miss Friday evening's 12th Annual Mill as Muse Artists Reception at Historic Yates Mill Pond County Park. Come see the entries, applaud the art and photography contest winners, and meet some of the artists.

The 2nd Friday ArtWalk takes place in Carrboro & Chapel Hill on the second Friday of every month. Venues offer live music, food, activities, hands-on art demonstrations, discounts, and more.

The North Carolina Museum of History will be holding an African American History Highlights Tour on Saturday to highlight some of the contributions made by African Americans to North Carolina history. Come back Sunday afternoon to enjoy the Mexican and Latin American folk music sounds of Orgullo y Alma Latina.

The Holly Springs Cultural Center will be showing Rio 2 Monday morning.

The Festivals and Shows

The Annual Holly Springs Community Arts Festival is back this weekend with three awesome events. Join them Friday night for a Dance Review. Project Dance will be celebrating the wide variety of dance styles. Saturday afternoon, the Festival features a display of young artist works, the scrap exchange, life size games, a book fair and the food trucks Brooklyn Boy's Pizza and Mr. A's Beignets. Saturday evening is a Dance Party and Big Chief. Drop the kids off for their own DJ and join Big Chief for a wide variety of "music that stands the test of time".

Downtown Wake Forest will come alive Saturday for the Mardi Gras Street Festival. Join them for a fun-filled day that features both a Street Festival and a Parade that's open to everyone.

The Vietnamese-American Association of Raleigh is hosting its annual Tet Celebration (Vietnamese New Year) Saturday. There will be cultural performances, martial arts, a lion dance, traditional Vietnamese food, and children"s games/prizes.

The Fairgrounds will host the three day Sportscard and Sports Memorabilia Show. They will have over 80 exhibitors as well as featured autobiography guests.

Looking for a bargain? New clothes, toys and other children's items will be offered all weekend at discounted prices during the Kids Exchange Consignment Sale at the Fairgrounds.

More to do at the Parks

They will be teaching Geocaching 101 on the American Tobacco Trail Friday afternoon. Bring your bike to the Trail Saturday to Bike for Heart Health. All participants will be entered into a drawing for a door prize following the ride.

Join rangers at Harris Lake County Park Saturday to learn simple ways to attract all kinds of Wildlife to your Backyard then build a birdhouse to take home.

Stop by Crowder County Park's Discovery Table Saturday afternoon to learn all about Birds of Prey. Celebrate Valentines Day with Mother Nature on Sunday by making a few homemade valentine presents for our feathered friends including a nesting ball and a bird feeder.

Gather 'round the campfire Saturday at Durant Nature Park to enjoy a Campfire Story and Marshmallow Roast. Adults are invited to join them Sunday for a Bamboo Harvest. Learn about some cool projects that can be made with bamboo as you work to remove non-native bamboo from the Preserve.

A Side of History, at Yates Mill Historic Park Saturday, will explore the Legends of Saint Valentine. Find out about the history of this centuries-old holiday, from ancient Roman rituals to the customs of Victorian England and then create your own Valentine's Day card. All ages are welcome to come back Monday through Wednesday to make Colorful Valentines! Park Tales on Wednesday will read the story Hedge-Hugs along with some fun Valentine's Day crafts.

Early risers are invited to do some Morning Bird Watching Sunday at Eno River State Park. You can also learn about the history of the Piper Cox House, the families who lived there, farming and pioneer life on the Eno River during Sunday afternoon's Open House.

Join a Falls Lake Ranger Sunday to take a hike through a small section of the park that has recently seen Prescribed Fire. During the hike you will discuss the importance of prescribed fire, how the park staff implements and manages fires and look at the equipment needed in a prescribed fire!

Sunday's Winter Hike at West Point on the Eno will explore the Pump Station Trail. join them for a 1.5 mile stroll to see Durham's first public drinking water source. You will pass building foundations and dams hiding in the woods, river, and creek.
