Whether you are into the crisp cold air of winter or are waiting for the warm winds of spring to come, there is everything from ice skating to tours of historic homes to keep your weekend fun!

Start the Weekend Early
 
For you Civil War Buffs, the fun starts Thursday evening at Bennett Place Historic Site. You are invited to join Ernest Dollar, historian and Director of the Horace Williams House in Chapel Hill, NC for a Civil War Roundtable on "The Emotional Impact of the Final Days of the Civil War".
Winterfest in Downtown Raleigh at the new City Plaza is going on until January 30th. This week on the outdoor rink, you can enjoy Date and Skate Thursdays, Rock Around the Rink Fridays, Family Tuesdays and Music Craze Wednesdays.
Mordecai Free Friday is back! Come on out Friday for a free guided tour of the antebellum plantation house, and three other historic structures: a plantation kitchen, plantation chapel and The Birthplace of Andrew Johnson-17th president of the United States.
Join the staff at Blue Jay Point County Park Friday night for a Night Prowl. On your nighttime exploration of the park you'll practice using your other senses to compensate for the dark.
Also after dark, you can take a Moonlight Paddle around Lake Michie or enjoy some hot chocolate and s'mores around a Community Campfire at Piney Wood Park.
Art in the Evening returns this Friday night. In addition to the 1957 movie, Peyton Place, tickets are still available for the Norman Rockwell exhibit. We enjoyed strolling through the exhibit last Friday night.
 
Back to Nature
 
Catch 'n Cook at Harris Lake Park will give you a chance to try your hand at winter fishing and then use cast iron pots over a fire to cook a back country meal featuring the catch of the day.
Come, learn about Occoneechee Mountain's geologic wonders and explore the pyrophyllite quarry with a real geologist on a Geology Hike. You can also join the Occoneechee Ranger to continue the work on the Loop Trail re-routing during a Trail Workday.
Would you be willing to donate some time and energy to Historic Yates Mill County Park? Come check out the Volunteer-In-Parks Interest Session to learn about the fun ways that you can help.
Beat the winter doldrums by gussying up your leafless trees with Tree Faces at the American Tobacco Trail! They'll provide everything you need to make a wonderful, whimsical addition to your favorite backyard tree.
This is a great time of year to explore one of our local State Parks. Eno River State Park invites you to join them on a Steam Station Hike to see the site of the University Station Power Plant and Umstead State Park will host a presentation and discussion about Birds of Prey.
Sunday afternoon, head on over to Crowder District Park to learn What Lives in the Pond.
 
More Fun at the Museums
 
Saturday is Kid's Day at the Raleigh City Museum! Come learn about the history of play through hands-on activities with the toys of our past. Kids will get a chance to play historic games and learn how to make toys such as cornhusk dolls and marbles at home.
Marbles Kids Museum features several fun events this week. Saturday brings Karate Kids as part of their Family Fit Series. Sunday, your child can delight in building with Gadgets & Gizmos. And don't forget that this Tuesday evening is Target $2 Tuesday Night.
Rags to Riches Theatre for Young Audiences will be at the North Carolina Museum of Art for a morning and an afternoon performance of The Owl and the Turtle. In between the perfomances, you are invited to make some Drop-In Crafts.
Pop some popcorn and bring the kids over to the Holly Springs Cultural Center for their Saturday morning family movie. This weekend they feature the last installment in the trilogy, Shrek Forever After
Visit the Museum of Life and Science and explore the dynamic world of Materials Science, as they celebrate Making Stuff, the new series debuting on PBS.
 
Fun at the Fairgrounds
 
Looking for some great deals? The Kids Exchange Consignment Sale is back again this weekend. Great prices on a huge assortment of baby items, toys and clothes.
All weekend long, the Hunt Horse Complex at the Fairgrounds will be hosting a Hunter Jumper Horse Show. Admission is free and the atmosphere is very casual, but its a great opportunity to get up close and see some beautiful horses and their riders perform at their best.
More than 100 exhibitors will be selling antique to modern toys including Barbie, die cast models, NASCAR and more at the North State Toy & Hobby Show.
Have you witnessed Flyball yet? Flyball is a fast-paced family-oriented dog sport where Dogs and people alike go wild over this relay race with 4 dogs per team. The DogGoneFast Flyball Club Flyball Tournament this weekend will be sure to keep the tails wagging.
