The Fun Starts Early
 
To finish out African American History Month, the Page-Walker House will be hosting an African American Literary Tea Thursday evening. Join local and regional African-American authors for an evening of conversation and tea.
Also on Thursday, the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences invites you to a Space Shuttle Discovery Launch. Make and launch your own drinking-straw rocket, enjoy an onstage demonstration of the making of a comet model and view the live launch of space shuttle Discovery STS-133 with Tony Rice, a NASA/JPL Solar System Ambassador.
Art in the Evening returns Friday night to the North Carolina Museum of Art with the 1947 film, Quai des Orfèvres.
A Native American Art Show and Sale from the southwestern tribes and pueblos including Santa Clara, San El Defonso, Acoma, Laguna and Navajo starts Friday and goes through Sunday at the State Fairgrounds. Hundreds of articles including jewelry, drums, bows, lances, rugs, pottery, Kachina dolls, artifacts, framed art work and other high quality southwestern art will be featured.

 

Enjoy the Spring Weather at the Parks

Are you ready to volunteer some time and put your staining /painting skills to the test! You can help REI grant recipient the Umstead Coalition administer some much needed Stain to the Cabins in Camp Lapihio.

Calling all K-8 teachers. Advanced Project Wild: Salamanders this Saturday at Harris Lake Park will include an introduction to common salamanders of the Piedmont, a salamander survey hike around the park and the incorporation of games and interdisciplinary activities suited for the K-8 classroom.
Come, learn about Occoneechee Mountain's geologic wonders and explore the pyrophyllite quarry with a real geologist on a Geology Hike.
Learn how to prune and maintain old varieties of fruit trees including Peach, Apple, Pear, Plum and Cherry as well as other fruits during a Pruning Workshop at Mordecai Historic Park.
Join a Park Ranger at Umstead State Park for a Canoe Tour around Big Lake to view wildlife in their natural surroundings.
Come on out to Blue Jay County Park for some Nature Games. Join Blue Jay staff for an informal session of indoor fun and games. Try out "Animal Track Twister", or "Bird Bingo". Maybe even "Who Goes There!" to guess what animal is making that sound.
Did you know that 2011 has been named Year of the Turtle in NC State Parks? Come to Eno River State Park and enjoy a presentation about the Eastern box turtle, a creature who has been called "the jewel of the forest" for the beautiful designs and colors found on their shells, skin and eyes.
 
Music at the Museums
 
Tap your toes and sing along to a dynamic mix of lively music and homegrown fun featuring farm life, animals, and nature during a Chidren's Performance by Rocking in the Forest with Farmer Jason at the North Carolina Museum of Art. There will be two performances with a Drop in Craft in between.
Teen Band Night is back at the Cary Senior Center for middle and high schoolers. Don't miss the chance to hear some really great bands and hang out with your friends!
The 5th Annual "Mill as Muse" exhibit will feature local works of art and photographs that feature the old mill at Historic Yates Mill County Park. Contest winners will be announced and prizes awarded, at this weekends's reception.
 
History Comes Alive
 
Come meet Joe Holt, the first African American student to try to integrate the Wake County Public School System. Join Mr. Holt and museum Raleigh City Museum staff as you explore the challenges African Americans faced when they fought for equal education in public schools.
2011 marks the first in a five-year commemoration of the American Civil War (1861-1865). Join them for the lecture Red Strings to kick off Duke Homestead's commemorative events!
The North Carolina Museum of History continues to explore the lives and accomplishments of African American North Carolinian's through an African American History Tour or a Hands on History Program where you will get to make a craft, jump a rope, or hear a story!
The North Carolina Museum of History invites you to sample such dishes as dirty matzoh and Mississippi praline macaroons, then share stories and swap recipes during a Cooking Demonstration: A Southern Jewish Passover. Join Chef Rich as she puts a deliciously southern spin on the Passover meal.
If you are looking for a fun day trip, head on over to the 251st Anniversary of the Battle of Fort Dobbs. Battlefield tours and musket and artillery firing demonstrations will be featured, as well as on going demonstrations of 18th Century military and American Indian camp life.
