 After all that rain this week everything is looking really green and lush! It looks like the weather this weekend is going to be fabulous so make sure to get out and enjoy one on the many festivals.

Festivals Around Town

 
Moore Square in downtown Raleigh is the place to be this weekend for Artsplosure. Expected to attract 80,000 people over the course of the weekend, the festival boasts non-stop activities, entertainment and more than 170 juried visual artists and crafters from across the country. This year you will be inspired by the student art show, and your kids won't want to miss the variety of entertainers on the The Kidsplosure Stage, which boasts a weekend full of family and kid centered entertainers. ParkGeek.com is thrilled to sponsor the awesome sand sculptor, Sandy Feat.

Celebrate North Carolina during the annual Got to be NC Festival. Come enjoy a mix of food, music, carnival rides and games, antique farm equipment and grandstand entertainment. And best of all, admission is free for all ages! The only paid events are the grandstand shows each day and the Carolina Pig Jig barbecue contest on Saturday.

NASA and the Raleigh Astronomy Club invite you to join them at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences for Astronomy Days. Visit NASA exhibits, view the sun through solar telescopes, learn about the art of astrophotography, meet live animals of the constellations and make and launch your own rocket.
The Museum of Life and Science will be celebrating the metamorphisizing magic of the butterfly at their Magic Wings Festival.
Hillsborough Hog Day returns to Downtown Hillsborough with a barbecue cooking contest, live music, children's games, antique car show, crafters, assorted vendors, Hog Day souvenirs, and lots of food.
The North Carolina State Capitol Grounds will be the site of both the 2011 AIDSWalk & Ride and a Civil War Living History Program on Saturday.
On Sunday, the troops will be organizing over at Historic Oak View Park as they are Preparing for War: The 26th NC in 1861. See a full camp reenactment and learn how the 26th NC Infantry Regiment was getting ready.

Weekend Starts Friday Night

Art in the Evening at the North Carolina Museum of Art takes on a new twist this Friday night with Teen Night.

Yogi Bear will be up on the inflatable screen for a Movie under the Stars in Historic Downtown Varina. Come early and enjoy a music DJ, on screen trivia and special appearance by the Fuquay Cruisers classic car club.
Experience Crowder By Night and get a close look at their stuffed owls and a hike to the amphitheater to listen for live ones.
The spring skies are great for viewing the stars. Come take advantage of the open views up at Lake Michie to observe a Starry, Starry Night.
The summer movie season is starting! Friday night kicks off the Durham Cinematheque & Movies at the Park at Durham Central Park with Water & Air: Under Up Over Through In and Beyond.

 

 Getting Outside at the Parks
 
   Who's in the Pond? That's what they will be exploring out at Harris Lake County Park with some dipnets.

They will be having an Amphibian Adventure and a Tubing Expedition over at West Point on the Eno

The Triangle Model Yacht Club is now a regular Saturday mornings out at Lake Crabtree County Park. Come check out their yachts and watch them race.
Spend a beautiful spring day at the North Carolina Zoo and check out the special event, Save Our Snakes.
They are going to set up lights around the play meadow at Little River Regional Park Saturday night to lure some Black Light Bugs.
Are you interested in introducing your family to fishing? Fishin' Frenzy at Lake Michie Recreation Area will provide Poles, bait and some guidance to kids ages five to twelve. The C.A.S.T. (Catch A Sure Thing!) program at Jordan Lake State Recreation Area is designed for youth ages 6 to 12. Kids can join in both Saturday and Sunday to learn basic fishing skills and get to try out their skills.
Fox, deer, beaver and raccoon are just some of the Mammals that can be found along the American Tobacco Trail. Come play an entertaining predator/prey game and make your favorite mammal tracks using plaster!
Join a Park Ranger at William B. Umstead State Park to learn how to read a map and use a compass. After a short discussion on Basic Land Navigation, there will be a field exercise.
Sunday morning, you can join a park ranger to search for Box Turtles as part of North Carolinas Box Turtle Mark/Recapture survey. The monthly hike takes place at Falls Lake State Recreation Area.

 

History and the Museums
 
The Mordecai Historic Park' Volunteers invite you to a huge Yard Sale featuring household items, books, antiques, needlepoint items, craft supplies, baked good and much more. The Historic House will also be open, so you can walk through and enjoy this ante-bellum plantation home.

 

Learn the basic operations of a Gristmill by participating in a family friendly, hands on program where you get to build your own gristmill craft at Yates Mill Historic Park.
The North Carolina Museum of History hosts a drop in program called Writing Home. See examples of letters from North Carolina's past and try your hand at writing with a steel-nib pen.
Music Makers with NCSKids will allow kids to explore all types of music through the instrument zoo, live performances and jam sessions. Come back to Marbles Kids Museum on Sunday for Gadgets & Gizmos, the partnership with NCSU College of Engineering's K-12 outreach program.
